To expand on The Corinthian. Mormons don't drink other "hot drinks" they do drink hot chocolate at times, but is better called warm chocolate, it's usually not to hot.
Also, it's a misconception that Mormons don't drink coffee because of the caffeine. if that were the case they wouldn't eat chocolate to. Not only has it been scientifically found the coffee has other chemicals that are unhealthy, the natural heat of coffee and the chemicals promote problems like ulcers and heart problems, the same with tea actually. Caffeine is not restricted by the church, in fact many drink Coke and Pepsi products. however it is cautioned since some do get addicted.

In the Word of Wisdom, the Lord revealed that the following substances are harmful:
* Alcoholic drinks (see D&C 89:5–7).
* Tobacco (see D&C 89:8).
* Tea and coffee (see D&C 89:9; latter-day prophets have taught that the term "hot drinks," as written in this verse, refers to tea and coffee).
When people purposefully take anything harmful into their bodies, they are not living in harmony with the Word of Wisdom. Illegal drugs can especially destroy those who use them. The abuse of prescription drugs is also destructive spiritually and physically.

A lot of LDS believe that caffine is a harmful drug. Therefor some do not drink anything with caffine in it. My friend is LDS, but not hardcore LDS so he's fine with caffine.

It has nothing to do with the temperature of the drink....coffee has caffeine.....that's the part that's forbidden.
Even decaf has traces of caffeine.

the caffeine in coffee, they won't drink caffeinated soda either. some do though, not alot.
don't want to affect their state of mind. want to be 'pure'
goes with no smoking cause it's bad for your health
