Some people seem to hold the exact text and the status of the bible as infallible in highest regard, more so it seems than seeking god. Seems a bit like making the bible an idol.

I think it could be argued that those Christians who consider it the sole source of knowledge on any and all topics, are idolizing it.

I think it would be impossible for a Christian to make the Bible an idol since the Word is God. If you mean that some people make the love of knowledge an idol, that's a whole different story...

A respected theologian put it this way:

"John's Gospel opens with the mysterious declaration, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (1:1). The Word is God Himself. This does not mean, however, that the black and white letters of the Bible are literally God, but rather, that the Bible embodies God."

The bible contains gods personality, direction, comfort, wisdom and many more qualities. Different people read the bible for different reasons. The bible has changed the lives of many people around the world, even to the point of death. It is the content of the bible that people are drawn to. I dont think that many people are using the bible as an idol but more as a tool to their worship of god. It would probably come across to you as though it seems they idolise it but I think the bible must have inspired and changed those peoples lives. Without the bible maybe their lives were worse off.

Maybe you could look at it this way: when a traveller travels to a foreign country how much would one protect their passport and visa. Its the contents of what the passport contains that is held in the highest regard.

While that might be true, for some, the Bible is considered to be direct from God, so what it says is what God has said. The Bible is considered to be infallible, thus to be used as basis for reply to questions about life. That does not exclude the need to pray and seek God for guidance. Their answers to prayer will always be in direct accord with the Bible. God does not change, nor does His word to man, which is the Bible. While this may not make sense to some, there are many things that have to be spiritually discerned, and seem foolish to the natural thinking of common man.

yeah some people make an idol out of the bible. However just because they believe everything it says doesn't mean it's idolized. These people think it is the exact word of God. In this case it like a letter your friends send you. As long as don't personify your friend with it, it's not a problem. When you start arguing with the letter, instead of sending letters to you friend to communicate. It more of the personification and praying to the bible that would make it idolizing, not how closely they believe in it.

Idolatry is considered anything that you worship except God and/or something you give more attention than God. The bible is the word of God, but not the object, Its the text. The word of God is God so we worship his Word not where the Word is.

Considering that we Christians believe the Bible is the Word of God, that would be a big NO..... Reading the Bible is HOW we stay close to God, that and praying, meditating, doing good works for Gods glory...... Reading the Bible is for edification and lifting our faith..... go in peace....... God bless

The bible is held in such high esteem because it is the word of God. It isn 't the book that we worship.......it is the Lord! If you are a Christian and a true follower of Christ.........................the book is true as it was told over 2000 years ago and is what God told others to write down to preserve His word for us until He comes again. How else were we to know His word when we weren't even born back then? It was His purpose so we could know Him.

Do you know the bible ? No,let me answer that for you ...NO!!!
Read in John 1:1 it says " In the beginning was the Word ,and the Word was with God, and the Word was God'.
God is the Word, and we worship God for who He is and we love His Word for what it is, it is His will , it is His law, it is everything to a Christian. If you don't know God's Word, then you don't know God.
It is just that simple !!!

The original text is infallible..as it is God breathed, and we use the bible to learn about and get closer to God. It is a tool and guide He gave us.

Yes, some do. They were the religious hypocrites that Jesus rebuked. Scribes and Pharisees so set on keeping the letter of the law that they were far from a personal relationship with God.

"The letter kills but the Word gives life."

Religion is about how you get to God.
Christianity is about how God got to you.
