there's no building code where i live, i live in the country. don't worry, there's 2 sets of stairs going either way. the trim in my room is dark brown, and the carpet, i can't change. it's an ugly orange/brown medley. darn 70's..

Paint it your favorite color.

You could paint one focal wall a soothing color and keep the rest neutral and light. I would create texture with fabrics and linens. Just pick a color you can live with. My favorite colors right now are Lunar Eclipse, Misty Lake, and Babbling Brook from Olympic Paint. Which by the way is low odor and great if you have no ventilation. Just keep the colors light, don't think you have to go with a yellow or orange to make the room bright. If possible you might also want to invest in recessed lighting if you have no windows. Halogen lights make everything bright. You can accent art, furniture or even wash light down the walls to create dimension and add drama. Hope it turns out great!

In my opinion, paint white or off white then choose bright art to decorate.

Good luck

Light colors light up the room and use can use a lot of bright paintings, colorful cushions and so on. Looks cheerful.

I have a dark room; painted White-Cream.
It looks lighted up. My friend has a yellow, not really Butter .. similar.
The room looks like a glow of light.

Dark colors make a room look small and light makes it large.
I hope these help.

What color is the floor, or colors that are in the room that you can't change?

Do a neutral cream white, or light color. It will make the space larger.

Get Daylight bulbs too. Go to the library on basement makeovers. You can put a pretend window up to give a homier feel - feng shui - wise,

window size mirror, christmas lights over that, bamboo shade over all of it.

Check out divine design on basement episodes. She does light blue with dark brown , and invest in some great lighting

I would go as close to white/eggshell as possible and use a satin finish. The size isn't bad but you have NO windows. Dark colors are going to make the room look smaller and absorb any light you are getting from an artificial source.

Also, I know it might sound corny but you could put up a cute pair of short curtains (closed) and pretend you have a window.

I hope you have adequate ventilation down there!

Bring pictures of your bedroom to Home Depot or Lowe's and the consultants there will help you decide. Walmart has the best paint however, but the help isn't as good.

i suggest you get a colour you really like, and have them lighten it up for you at the paint store. maybe a really light blue or teal. make sure your ceiling and trim is painted white.
as for the floor, you can buy snap together hardwood flooring that you can put over the carpet that won't damage it underneath. it's really cheap and easy at ikea. if you get it in a light wood or bamboo, it'll brighten the room up.
i'd get some fluffy white sheets and blankets for your bed, and maybe accent it with a mosquito net. it'll make the room look more bright and airy.

If you have a good concrete floor underneath i would pull up that horrible sounding carpet!! paint the floor and use area rugs either (2) 3x4 or 1 5x8 to accent !! first you need to decide what theme or what your decor (hobbies) you want your room to be, then choose your colors..

Definitely go w/ brighter colors. Sometimes splitting the wall up w/ different colors helps make the space look bigger. Darker colors towards the floor and lighter colors towards the ceiling. Also one thing that makes a space look really big are mirrors, it creates the illusion of a larger space. Be creative and have fun w/ it!

According to the building code you can't have a basement bedroom with no window. Or at least you shouldn't, how will you get out if the basement is on fire? That window is your only escape, talk with your parents about this, they may need to do some remodeling.
