I've heard that it was because a long time ago, it was considered good luck if a man could take an article of clothing for the bride. The men at the wedding would then basically attack the bride to rip off pieces of clothing for good luck. Then the tradition started that the groom would throw the garter to keep his wife from being ransacked. Taking it off with the teeth is just for show.

Actually this is not an American born custom, it is a custom that started in Europe back in the 14th century.

It was thought to be good luck to leave with a piece of the brides clothing. First tradition was guests ripping the brides gown. Brides decided they did not like that so they began throwing guests pieces of their clothing such as the garter t the men. IN time men became inpatient (drunk) and tried removing it themselves which started the tradition of the groom removing it and tossing it to the men.

A custom dating back to ancient times the removal of the garter symbolized the bride relinquishing her virginity to the groom.

Most often now the groom removes the garter with his hands.

It's not the whole garter belt, it's just a garter on the leg. And he's really not eating it, he's removing it with his teeth because some guys consider this sexy. It's more a show of machismo than anything else.
