Linux is not actually an operating system, but a kernel. What you want is a Linux distribution (distro), not actually Linux its self.

For someone who is new to Linux, there is little debate about what distro is best.

You may also wish to try Kubuntu, Ubuntu with KDE instead of Gnome. They are different desktop environments, so this basically means that your interface will look different, but it will be the same software bellow it.

If you are using an external drive, keep in mind that it will run a little slowly. Ubuntu is much faster than Windows in general, so it probably won't actually annoy you, but just remember that it could be even better.

It depends on which version, or "distro" that you want. You can browse some of the different ones at:

http://distrowatch.com/

If you are talking about the one that the largest number of beginners use, that would probably be Ubuntu. You can dowload it from here:

You can also order CDs if you do not want to burn your own. Ubuntu provides them free. Distrowatch will provide them for the cost of the CD / DVD and shipping.
