Whats the policy today on tattoos in the navy? I have a couple on my forearm and he biggest one probably takes up half my arm. I live in San Diego California and wondered if they would turn me away. It seems like the only branch that would take me is the army and the army national guard, I am not big on joining them because they are more ground combat. Could there be a chance they would take me? Does it sometimes depend on the recruiter? Is there anyone who has gone to a recruiter lately and gotten turned down due to tattoos? None of them are racial or negative like they say in there policy. I have just heard different things. That sometimes they will take you if you can tell them the meaning of them and they arent negative in anyway. Please help.

I've read different things about it and it sounds like your tattoo might fall within the accepted limits. But nobody can say for sure unless you talk to an active recruiter.

There is an instruction out that lists the exact procedures regarding tattoos in the Navy. It tells you what is and is not allowed, as far as what you can get tattooed, and where you can and can not get a tattoo. Click on the link below to find all of this information...

I'm in the Navy.

Any ways, as long as they are not objectionable they will write you a "waiver" to get you in. The policy used to be that they did not care at all but some people got a little crazy. Both signing up and those that were in. I have seen some people with some pretty racey tat's like naked girls and what not. I have also seen people with tats on their hands, neck, etc. which are big no-no's. I have even seen some OBVIOUS gang related tat's as well. But, those people were no longer in the gangs.

Also, people still, even though they shouldn't, get tats without a "chit" to allow them. So, I would not worry about it.

The recruiter will be more worried about drug use, DUI's, felonies, etc.

There are new regulations for tattoos in the Navy and Marine Corps. There is limits on size, location (none on the face or front neck), and type (no objectionable language, nudity, etc..).

If you are interested in joining the Navy, talk to your local recruiter and ask him/her about tattoo regulations.

they have been cracking down on tattoos recently. the largest one may indeed be a DQ factor. Tattoos cannot show in uniform, and there are short sleeved uniforms. All you can do is ask.
