my computers keeps blocking INSTALLSHIELD UPDATE SERVICE UPDATE MANAGER ... but what is this? Do I realluy need whatever it is or can I just remove the program. Please advise.

Install Shied is used to guide you when you are installing some software..
Just remove it

What ever firewall you are running is blocking this service from running. Not only will Windows Updates use this service - but so will just about all the software installed on your computer - Media Player, Real Player, Quicktime, etc.
You can partially disable it - but what about your software updates?

Log on as administrator and check for updates at the computer manufacturer site. Also check at Microsoft for updates. IMO update problems stem from not having the administrator access.
Shouldn't delete ANY program with out knowing exactly what you're are deleting.
