It's tough to say, without knowing your boyfriend's physical attributes (height, weight, etc.). He probably had at least 3 or 4 beers.
Also, he probably didn't blow 1.24. Perhaps .124... but he would have alcohol poisoning if he had 10 times the legal limit, and would have been vomiting, seriously ill, etc.
EDIT:
If he really *did* blow 1.24, then there is absolutely *no* reason he should have been out on the road. That's just asking for instant death... a danger to himself and everyone else.

How do you know he was lying? How much it would take for him to blow that much would depend upon many factors such as his size, whether he ate and what he was drinking. It would be easy for him to go over the limit with three beers if they were drank consecutively without food over a period of 45 minutes to an hour if he is an average build guy.
What I did not understand were the two alcohol levels. He would not know either until tested. It appears he was tested on the spot as you say at 1.24 and then in the jail it went to .089. This would support that he drank his beers quickly and they were dissipating quickly as well. I'm not sure about the **** you stated he was talking, unless he told you he had not drank anything. Otherwise, the facts seem to conclude that he may have had three beers in a short period of time.

You already asked this question. For more specifics a large grown man 2 beers is about .08 (legal limit) so he might have had anywhere from 10 to 14 beers. Thats just an estimate so you can try to look it up for something more reliable.

What does it matter how much he had to drink? He was arrested and booked for a DUI.
p.s. He had more than a few.....1.24 = he is on slurrrr status!
