Probably the best thing for you to do would be to set up your PC so that it will dual boot with windows & linux, it's a very easy operation nowadays, that way you can test out all the programmes & hardware without fully committing yourself to linux.

There are emulator programmes which allow you to run windows software on linux, for the best games support Cadega is probably your best programme for this:
http://www.cedega.com/

there is a small monthly fee but it is geared to run games.
There is also crossover office which is the commercial version of wine:

this will run some games but is geared more to productivity.
The advantage of these 2 programmes is that they are easy to install & use, whereas wine can be harder, although much more configurable.

To set up a dual boot system you will need to download the linux distro and install it, most modern distros will carry out the job of installation & partitioning your hard drive with very little input from the user. Ubuntu is very popular now but I would recomend Opensuse for a beginner, it's a matter of choice.

Any Linux OS must be suited, yet you're speaking approximately 2 VERY categories of working structures here. Linux and homestead windows are below no circumstances an analogous. The purpose of the two is diverse. Linux is extra of a networking OS and maximum XP projects/effective factors/applications are geared in the direction of the hassle-unfastened homestead person. try pink Hat Fedora.

Doom 3 and Quake should work, or at least have ports available. I'm not sure about hardware acceleration, so performance might suffer. Halo is out of the question.

Many XP programs work well under Wine, many don't. Often, the only way to know is to try them.

Go to winehq.org and see if you can find your game there. Some games run perfectly, others don't run at all. It really depends. But that site will have lots of info for you. You shouldn't have any hardware problems in linux.

Of course not. Linux and Windows have different platform.

I think there are some games provided for Linux too

You shouldn't have problems with your cards, but I doubt your games will work
