We live in a canyon with lots of animals around including coyotes. My 2 year old Pomeranian was killed yesterday, by what it seems, coyotes. I know that small dogs aren't supposed to be outside, but he was in the gazeebo and I went to take him in, and he was lying dead. My mom said she said a bite wound on his stomach. I was wondering if coyotes are afraid of people, and if there's anyway that they wont be able to jump over our fence and try to kill our other dog.?
Ty so much! I appreciate all your answers. This is a very tragic moment for me.

yes. they are afraid of people...usually. if you are out their with your dog, they will unlikely attack it.
in some areas, they are starting to lose their fear of people...but they don't attack adult humans...
sorry about your doggie...

I'm so sorry about what happened. but i can give you some info that should help your problem. i live were there are coyotes that walk up and down the street all day long and so every one around are neighbor hood is very alert.but coyotes are terrified of humans they will only go for some thing smaller then them or some thing about there size. also i cant think of any way to keep them out of your back yard except a electric fence. or put spikes up around the top of the fence maybe that will help. and i don't know if you take your dogs for walks but if you do then i would take a bat or big stick with you . in my neighborhood people take bats , sticks, and some even take little pistols. witch to me is kinda scary. but coyotes take dogs from people walking next to them too. it happens all the time were i live.i had 2 of my cats eatin by coyotes. here is a Web site that i hope helps you! sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry about your poor dog. Coyotes are very much opportunists, and unfortunately, small dogs are prey. I don't know about the coyotes in the south, but in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin they come out in broad daylight and roam through neighborhoods. They go through trash and grab dogs right off leashes. In downtown Chicago earlier this year, a coyote walked into a coffee shop in the Loop during rush hour. They are very much beginning to lose their fear of us because they need to live near us to survive.
I would really suggest, if you get another small dog, to fence a part of your yard. Coyotes are lazy and won't often jump a fence. Or maybe find a much larger breed to own.

I grew up in a canyon area where coyotes killed many pets as well. It is best to keep your pets inside at night, because unless you get a different fence, they might find ways to get in. Also, I have seen them wandering around during the day as well, but usually solitary and not with their pack. So during the day, make sure your dog is supervised when outside. I am so sorry about your doggie. I hope you feel better soon!

We have coyotes in the middle of Milwaukee, which is a pretty large city. The police chief discounted all the complaints about attacked pets in his area...till he was out walking his spaniel and a coyote came and attacked it while it was on leash with him. THEN something was done!
Yes, they can get very aggressive and bold. They can be so used to people that they become a threat to pets right in your back yard.

Most coyotes won't attack a person. Small house pets are fair game to them and very few fences will stop them . Sorry about your dog.

I am sorry for your loss. I don't really know what to do about coyotes, but you can call your local wild animal trapper and ask them. Good luck and God bless.
