A guitar....what else? An amplifier? Or what? I just want to spend my free time on other stuff other than TV or video games!

You don't really need an amp. Just get a cheap acoustic guitar and search for chords online. Try it out and see if you like it.

I started just playing songs I already knew the words and melody too. Once I added chords it was complete.

Later if you really like guitars you can get an electric. Then you definitely need an amp.

1. Purchase a decent acoustic guitar in the $300 range.
2. Purchase Hal Leonard's Guitar Method #1 for beginners.
3. Read the book and apply its principles slowly and carefully.
4. Have patience with yourself as you struggle to obtain the necessary calluses to continue.
5. Enjoy the challenge of accomplishment.
