When she saved it, was she careful to save it as filetype Word doc?

Open the folder which contains the file. Click View. Select Details. Can you see the three-letter extension of the file? That will tell you how it was saved. Maybe the file can be converted back into Word. There is a free online converter at www.media-convert.com.

Open word from the start bar, click on file, then open, look for the file that she named or if there is one with the first few words of the essay. Click on that and click open.

Check to see if what she opened was a sort of mock file. Get her to double check for the file with the actual name she named it and not with some symbols in front of it!

CHECK IF SAVED IN RIGHT CHARACTOR SET.
IS EASY TO SAVE FILE WITHOUT CHECKING.
WORD CAN USE SEVERAL CHARACTOR SETS.
