Hey, Im thinking about adopting an dog ( a little underneath 2 years old). The thing is, im not very crazy about his name....Achile.....I was wondering, can you change a dog's name? I once heard you could, but you have to keep the last syllable.....?????

Yes, you can. Say Achile first along with the new name. Lets say you're going to name him Rhett, so you would say Achile..Rhett. Soon he'll get the idea and drop his old name and just call him by his new name. Changing his name is a good thing for his new beginnings. All the best with your new furry friend!!!! Take care;~)

u can change a dogs name. sometimes shelters if the dog was stray will give a dog a name just so its not just a number so he may not even know it....just like training a puppy keep useing the new name.
spot come.
spot sit.
spot down.
don't let his name stop u from giving him a home. and good on u for adopting!

good luck!

You can change the dog's name to anything. Keeping the last syllable might make it easier for the dog. Let the dog adjust to your home first. Use it's new name for every command.

Well we adopted a cat who was over 10 years old, and she took well to her new name, probably because she was very seldom called her old one. I've also heard of pets that are called one name by one person and another by the other person or have a "nickname" All pets are different like people. I say, try it, if it doesn't work, go back to the old name.

you can. the dog will be very confused at first but try some of these things.

call his name, when ever he responds to his new name give him a treat and praise him.

make sure you don't accidentally call him achile, this will confuse him even more during the process.

this woun't be that difficult of a process but if you want to change his name it can be done.

People do it all the time! I adopted my dog , almost 2 years old, and renamed him because no one knew what he was called . There are alot of dogs picked up and no one knows
what they were called. So your dog will come to you, whatever you call him, if you take good care of him with love and kindness!!

Naw, you can do it any time, but you have to be consistent. They learn their new name really quick if there's a food treat involved. Say the new name as you call him, and especially as you set his food bowl down in front of him.

We have renamed both animals we got from the humane society ('boo boo kitty' was awful, and 'tuvok' didn't fit at all). It didn't take long.

I dont think it matters too much. we have reomed dogsin the past that were ex show dogs andthe people have changed their names, you just have to love him heaps and reward him for coming to you using the new name he will soon pick it up.
