1. so you can know where to never go again as a religion (ie, Crusades)

2. Knowing the history helps you cement what you believe. I change a lot of my beliefs once I started reading about church tradition and where it came from. For example, Sunday night church is actually a pretty recent thing. So it doesn't make you a bad Christian if you don't go. Same with MANY other doctrinal issues I am not even going to touch. :)

The church wields a great deal of influence over the government. Many civilizations throughout time have relied on a representative of a Higher Power to serve as a mediator and governor of sorts.
The history of religions shows us the error of man's ways. For instance, the Holy Bible has two books that were authored by King Solomon; Proverbs and Song of Solomon. In them he tells of his mistakes and those of his children that affected a whole empire. The Sacred Laws are what we interpret as good will towards neighbors and Human Rights.

From a biblical view?

History is know where we come from so that we can make decisions for where we are going.

Protestantism is a break from Roman Catholicism and it is only history, specifically bibical history that allows the bible to be the sole authority.

Catholicism takes a different approach the utilizes both written (biblical) tradition and oral tradition. Know what the scriptures says to support a broader teaching.

In any walk of life it is most important to know where one has been in order to know where one is going. It helps a great deal to know what has worked in the past and what hasn't. If you do not learn about the mistakes of the past, they are bound to be repeated.

Even for myself, personally, I understand my parents and family dynamics by taking a broader look at my myriads of aunts, uncles, great-aunts, etc. I understand better what makes me "me". When I see my mother poking through stuff at a yard sale, I have a tiny idea of what it must have been like growing up in the shadow of the Great Depression.

Sometimes I am saddened that we did not continue speaking French in my childhood home. All that is taught in schools is the Parisian French....my parents and their parents (and all the others) grew up with the Canadian form of French from the small farming towns -- Les Cantons De L'Est.

Because once you understand that the rock that the Church stands upon is the Truth of what Jesus Christ taught the Apostles, and what the Apostles taught their Disciples, and the influence of Greek Gnosis into the later teachings of the Church. The influence of paganism in the early 300's. You will find out why the "church" of today is very different than the one that God designed.

What does it matter ? If it is a school assignment, questioning "why" they gave it to you won't change you have to "do" it. You didn't state what church are talking about in the first place...

It's a good idea to know history in general. So you know where you came from. How you (nasty word about to be written) evolved.

The history of the Church is good for eveyrone to know. Catholics can relish it, Protestants can relish it, Atheists can relish it, Secularists can understand it's etimology.

It tells you from Whence We Came.

If you do really understand the True Church, you will be found outside of organized and institutional Christianity and the Church as we know it.

Any one who dare to really lives by every Word that proceed out of the mouth of God had been traditionally and systematically thrown out of the Church and, unceremoniously at that !

I know, and so do those who are in the same league; knows what I am talking about !
