Probably not. Yes. No.

Linux isn't for the average computer user. Yes, it's very stable and is actually getting to be a viable option for many people, but it still requires a bit more computer skill than the average person. And you certainly can't use Microsoft Office in Linux, though there are many open source alternatives that are freely available.

I recommend you do some research before switching over. Linux is not for everyone.

The decision whether it is "worth it" is up to you. I highly recommend dual-booting with Windows, instead of a clean install, so you can get a better feel for it. I found it to be worthwhile. I dual-boot with Windows, but rarely use it.

You can run SOME Windows programs with a compatibility layer called "Wine." I don't believe Office '07 works, though. There are some alternatives, though, such as OpenOffice.

Before switching to Linux, check out Free BSD. Free BSD is a freeware operating system that has a strong following. It is based on Unix, not Linux. Unix is the big (and better) brother to Linux Ubuntu.

Like Linux, you will not be able to run MS products on Free BSD. There are a lot of freeware programs available in Free BSD, but the most glaring absence is PC games. There are relatively few games available for Free BSD OS.

Check it out.

XP is OK, but Vista is a puking dog. My next PC will likely be a Free bsd machine.
