Get a soft toothbrush and brush the retainer with toothpaste... give it a good scrubbing. I used to do it once or twice a week. If that doesn't work or you just want to be extra clean then pour some Listerine into a shallow bowl or cup that is big enough to hold your retainer and soak it for an hour or so. Just make sure you rinse it after or it may causing a burning feeling when you put it back in.

What type of retainers do you have? I have Essix and it smells bad too LOL. I dont think you can do much about it, you cant even chew a gum when you wear it. I wore it for 1 month 24 hours a day then after 1 month i have to wear it for 3 months only at nights, then thats all (weird no?). Just buy an oral spray for bad breath and use it when needed. When you have the retainers out of your mouth, then just use a brush and toothpaste. I know i shouldnt do it on Essix retainers but nothing else helps.

i have a retainer and it normally smells pretty bad too, but all i do is rinse it with warm water and brush it really well with minty toothpaste. It really helps. But my orthodontist told me not to soak it in any mouthwash of any sort, and not to put it in too hot of water. We may have different kinds of retainers, i'm not sure, but good luck!

My orthodontist told me to use the denture cleaner tablets in hot water every couple of days to keep my retainer clean. Works great.
