I am looking to buy a moutain bike for around $500 to ride on paved biking trails and off road a little bit. I am not sure what to get as in hard tail or full suspension, what size to get, and what brand. I am a 16 y/o boy and 5,10. I looked at gt and iron horse bikes and really liked the iron horse but i am not sure because i have had mongoose bikes all my life and i also like konas. I would really appreciate any advice u can give me about moutain bikes.

For that budget, and for what you want to do, I think that a hardtail is the way to go.

Both GT and Iron Horse have good bikes, but also check for Trek and Specialized. Go to a bike shop and try them, how they fit is very important.

For what you wrote the Trek SU200 should be investigated.
I picked one up for $480.

I have high end bikes for heavy technical trail riding and this bike is great for the road and paved paths. Forget suspension at this price range because anything you buy will be poor quality. This bike puts a lot of value under you.

If you really do not want to spend alot,,,try Pawn shops , I picked up an $800.00 bike for around$250.00. The bikes you mentioned Iron horse and mongoose are OK for what you plan to do but, If you take those bikes out for extreme riding I do not trust their components to hold up to the test. Go to bike shops with name brands get names of good bike and start searching pawn shops. good luck

depends on the age and quality of the bike, for example, the 400quid one i had came with a sealed unit bottom bracket, i wore it out within 1000 miles (sadly i had milometer too) i bought a new one plus tools to fit it for about 30quid, i kept the cost down by buying a cheapish unit but some of them can be silly money. my advice unless you intend to use the bike a fair bit is to take it to a shop and get someone else to fix it, try your local market (brightons has two bike repair places) also uni's run bike repair days, i doubt they ask for student id and even if they do just blag it :)

Stay away from suspension at that price; they are too heavy and cheap. Get a Kona or GT in about a 19" frame.

Suspension is a bit overrated in my opinion -- most riders just don't need it. At your age, I feel you're better off working on your skills to hop curbs than to rely on suspension as a crutch. Until your interests and skill level get to the point where you want to do vertical drops, you ought to do without the full suspension.
