I'm trying to exercise during the early morning because I'm dead tired after work. If I wake up at 5:30am every day even if I haven't slept at least 6-7 hours.. is the exercise basically worthless because my body isn't well rested?

the quality of sleep is more important than the quantity, there is tons of medical study on the topic.

personally I think I have averaged 5 hours a night for the past 20 years.

It's not worthless, but it's not as effective because you won't be working as hard. Sometimes if you don't get enough sleep constantly, your body runs of adrenaline and stops burning the fat, causing you to stop losing weight. It's important to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night, but once in a while if you don't get that much it's okay. When it's a pattern though, then it's a problem. Also, lack of sleep is known to cause weight gain due to you not bieng able to make proper eating decisions because of the lack of sleep.

You will still benefit from your exercise routine but you do need sleep of 7 to 8 hours.

I dont think exercise is pointless at any point of time. You are still getting benefits from exercising even if you are not getting the reccommended amount of sleep. I would continue to do what you have been doing.
