My father just gave me a set of old 901's from the 80's. I have the speakers and the stand but not the equalizer that belongs with it (we have yet to find it). I am dying to get these speakers up and running. I wanted to know if the speakers can go without the EQ until I can buy or find one? I can deal with the sound being sub par for the time being. I just wanted to know if not using an EQ would either damage the speakers or if the sound would be so bad as to not want to listen to them. If they sound good (but not great) I will gladly set them up and save up to get the EQ.

Thanks!

Hi there.I remember seeing the original 901s back in 1972 at the first HI.FI. Show in Sydney. The equaliser is used to boost the bass and treble of the individual 9 four inch, full range speakers in the enclosure.Because of the size of the speakers (4 inches) they mainly produce the mid-range frequencies as they are too large for a tweeter and too small for a woofer. So the equaliser provides the frequency boost necessary for them to produce the sound of a full range speaker.
You could probably use them without the equaliser but there will be a roll off of the highs and lows to give you a mainly mid-range sound. You could probably use another equaliser if you cant find the original.Hope this helps.

Yes, the EQ goes between the pre-amp and amp connections. A good choice of equipment, that will provide a great sound reproduction through your speakers.

You certainly won't damage them by not using the EQ, assuming you don't over drive them to the point of distortion. Furthermore, most modern receivers have built-in EQ's that should do the job just fine.
