Will optical reproduce HD sound?

I have an Onkyo TX-504 with no HDMI inputs, will I be able to get DTS-HD or Dolby HD through what I already have?

No

Even if s/pdif could transmit DTS-HD or Dolby-HD (which it does not), your receiver does not have the capability to decode those formats.

No the only to hear the full capacity of DTS-HD and DolbyTrueHD is either by using an HDMI cable to your receiver or by using the 6 analog cables from the player to the receiver.
