Apparently my nephew (13) was at her house using the Internet, when a stranger instant messaged him saying they were an AOL represenative and needed his password to check his account.

My nephew told the person no, that he knew they were running a scam and reported them. He told my Mother thinking she would be proud, but she totally flipped out.

She went downstairs, deleted his AOL account and put a password on the computer so he can't even use the non-Internet features. He kept trying to explain that he had done the right thing, but she wouldn't listen.

What do you think?

i think she overreacted BIG time. but then i think it might have been because it SCARED her.

to her, she probably feels she is protecting your VERY YOUNG nephew from horrible ppl by keeping him away from them.
yes your nephew did the right thing, and he sounds like a very smart young man, but i think your mom was just doing what she felt was necessary to "protect" him from harm.

maybe in a day or two she will have time to think about it, and calm down. until then...DO NOT hound her about it...but if you want to discuss it w/her be calm about it and point out that your nephew is a responsible young man and did do the right thing.

This was an extreme overreaction. She needs to realize that your nephew did a very mature and responsible thing. Many young people would fall prey to that, but he demonstrated a great deal of maturity by taking affirmative action AND then telling her! What kind of person is she?

If she doesnt understand how passwords or fraud work, then she can do her own research - But she is making a big mistake. He will feel like he cannot be honest with her, and he will start to not trust her reactions.

If she can get online, have her read this, please. He did the right thing and she needs to be more like your nephew - Responsible and adult.

I definitely sounds like a scam. AOL isn't going to ask for your password.

Maybe your Mother misunderstood what had happened, or maybe he wasn't supposed to be on there in the first place.

Sounds like your nephew has a sensible head on his shoulders! Yes, I tend to think that when you take responsibilities away from young people, they are not safer, but more likely to go somewehere esle with less protection devices. They also do not learn how to keep themselve safe in life. Education and really talking to your kids about such matters is the best way of keeping them safe, not isolating them.

I think she compleatly over reacted. I think she should be proud of him because he thought before reacting to a message like that. I think it was a scam alse because a AOL representative would NEVER ask 4 your password unless he/she was over the phone and you or your Mother called them. Come to think of it, i dont think they will ask for your password, just your infomation. But as i said before, I think she was in the wrong.

Whooaaaa....that was very smart of your nephew and I think he proved himself that he is responsible on the internet. Your mother is definetly overreacting. Personally, I would've rewarded him for making such a smart decision. Not all kids are mature or educated enough to know what to do in a situation like that. Kudos to nephew! NO kudos to Mother =(

in the day of internet preditors and bing able to access personal info with a password, she did the right thing, as a mother(a 23 year old one at that) i would have done the same she was just worried about her child and wanted to keep him safe and that is her responsibility as a parent, i would have gotten rid of the whole computer, because we as mothers have the primal instinct to protect our young at any cost so what if you loose a computer if you protect your child, you will understand once you have one

You are correct, your mother reacted completely wrong . She needs to realize that your nephew will be using the Internet for the rest of his life and the fact that he reacted completely appropriately was the right thing to do and she should commend him for being careful and doing the right thing.

I think a 13 year old understands the Internet better than your mother does. He did the right thing and she owes him an apology.
