I've lived here my whole life, and I still think it's incredibly fun to live here. It consistently rates as the safest big city in the U.S.

The same with other big cities, there are some not-so-great parts. This is true even with most small towns. At least here, if anything happens, there are usually people around to see it! That's a deterrent in and of itself.

Your story about hearing of a killing down the street from you is a very uncommon one around here, and I'm sorry that happened while you happened to be here. Nonetheless, that's really an exception, an aberration. That's not an everyday thing.

Sure, it's an intimidating place if you're from a smaller town, and maybe even scary. I was recently out of town for a month, to some of the most remote parts of the U.S. and Canada accessible by highway. It's a completely different world out there, and I can see why New York can be a bit scary. People who aren't from around here aren't used to, for example, panhandlers on the streets. If you don't want to buy anything, just ignore them, don't even answer them or look at them. Keep walking, and they generally won't bother you. They'll spend their time bothering someone else who will listen :-) That, and people might not take too kindly of having pictures taken of them without being asked. I know I'd probably find that kind of weird as well.

When you live in New York, you pick up little nuggets of knowledge like that over time. It's called being street-smart. You learn what to watch for, you learn where to go and where not to go, you learn how to carry yourself there. Once you've done that for a while, and get used to things, it's not so intimidating any more. When you learn to do things the way native New Yorkers do them, you quickly learn what an incredible (and fun!) place this is.

As for bad traffic, we beat the traffic by using mass transit. Many Manhattan residents don't even bother buying cars. Our system is among the best in the world. It's quick, it's clean, it's cheap, and it runs 24 hours a day. When I go to a city whose mass-transit system shuts down late nights (for example, Washington), I find myself shocked. That's unimaginable for a New Yorker.

As for seeing stars, I'm not sure if you mean famous people or the hot, giant balls of gas in the sky millions of miles away. Either way, you don't see them too often here, but there are places you can go to see both of them! For famous people, there are shows to go to, and maybe you'll see somebody in a restaurant or whatever. Almost never happens to me, but hey, who knows? They're everywhere. As for the stars in the sky, there are too many lights here. But go a little bit away from the city, and there are some dark places where you can look up and see those millions of points of light way up there.

It's a great town when you get used to it. I wouldn't mind living here forever if I can.

Whoa, the "Top Contributor's" post is nice, but some of it is misleading. His or her information might be out of date? Park Slope has not been cheap for 20 years now. It's a very hot neighborhood. A one-bedroom will start at at LEAST $2000/month. Same with Boerum Hill, and the Lower East Side in Manhattan is probably even more expensive. In those neighborhoods, it would be difficult to live easily on $50,000/year. There are other neighborhoods where $50,000 would be easier. I know Brooklyn best, so for one-bedrooms starting around $1500 or $1600 in Brooklyn neighborhoods that are still decent if not as chic as Boerum Hill or Park Slope, I'd look in Windsor Terrace, Sunset Park, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Ditmas Park, Greenpoint, Crown Heights North.

I think it is a great place to visit, I just personally wouldn't want to live there (unless I had tons of money and could live in a great apartment). I really do enjoy going to the restaurants in the city or shopping or going to see shows like Regis & Kelly....it is a lot of fun!!

I just don't think I could deal with the crazyiness of all the noise and people all day long!! Plus, it's so expensive for the size of property you are getting or renting. I rather live in a more suburban area where I have a yard but still have some peace and quiet! But NYC is definitely a really cool place to be and a great experience!!

Please excuse "silver fantasy" for the comment he made when he said that saying New York is dangerous is just ignorance. First he needs to learn how to spell ignorance. My mom told me about this lady who lived in New York and she was attacked on the street by this guy right in front of people, and even though she was screaming for help, they just kept walking. How scary is that? I am not saying New York is the most dangerous place in America by no means, I'm just saying that every state has it's dangerous areas. I know New York has some very nice places. When I do get the chance to travel I am always more cautious because it is a strange place, maybe not to the people who live there but to me it is. It's just like when my friends come down to see my shows, they always say they feel like they are coming into "Deliverance" I just find it private and peaceful. The big apple is beautiful though isn't it? When I went I loved the old theaters, and Madison Square Garden is where I plan on performing someday. So, yes I think it would be a very cool and interesting place to live.

It *is* fun to live in New York. Every city has crime and traffic problems, as do most suburbs and rural areas. In NYC we have an excellent (not perfect) mass transit system and a very visible and effective (again not perfect) police force.
Aj, you're referring to the murder of Kitty Genovese. Not only was it an isolated incident that occurred 43 years ago, but further research has revealed that KG's neighbors DID intervene and chase off the guy who appeared to be mugging her. They didn't know he came back later in the night and attacked again.
