..... and why?

2007-08-26 14:42:57 · update #1

I really hope no Mormon bashers show up the give thumbs down.

I saw something this evening that said Mormons regard the Book of Mormon as more important than the Bible and that they worship Joseph Smith more than Jesus. It's amazing how much misinformation about all the various religions exists out there on the web! I asked this question hoping to hear from actual Mormons (I almost said "real" LOL) so that I could hear it from "the horses mouth" as they say. I appreciate your responses as they help me have a better understanding of your faith - which I truly don't know much about beyond the Osmond family!

Thanks Ladies!

To Brother: I DON'T just believe everything I read on the internet - if you'd taken time to read the details you'd have known that.

Jesus of course. Joseph Smith did not die in the cross for our sins and he's not the son of God mentioned in the Bible. Jesus is our savior! Joseph was a Prophet.

I'm not Mormon anymore, but what the heck... I like to type.

Mormons believe that Jesus Christ was sent to be the Messiah, and that He died for the sins of the World.

They believe that Joseph Smith was a true prophet, who was given a vision from God, and sent to give the World the "full" gospel. He is considered a martyr, and a great man, but not the Messiah.

Now, Mormon-bashers, make with the thumbs down!

Very easy. Jesus Christ, of course.

Christ is the Savior because through his sacrifice in which he died for our sins, he has given us the opportunity for Eternal life.

Joseph Smith was a prophet of God.

A lot of people who are against the LDS (mormons) church say that we hold Joseph Smith in a "higher regard" than Jesus Christ. This statement couldn't be further from the truth. Christ is the Savior, and the central figure of our faith. The Bible and the BOM are intertwined and are based on the teachings of Christ.

After all, we are the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Regardless the many interpretations of the Doctrine of Salvation as quoted above, there is only one Savior and Redeemer of all mankind for all the creations--Jesus Christ.

Joseph Smith is revered as a prophet as Moses is, but he is not the Savior.

This has been an honest answer from Guitarpicker56.

Actually, Mormons believe faith in Christ Jesus "and" the teachings of Joseph Smith are required for salvation. I will quote from the Mormon "Doctrines of Salvation"
Pages 189-190 state: "No salvation without accepting Joseph Smith....If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...then this knowledge is of the most vital importance to the entire world. No man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God" This is written in their Doctrines of Salvation exactly as I have quoted it here. (Abbreviated due to space)
Their belief in 2 Saviors is in opposition to Gods Holy Word.
Christ Jesus is the only way to the Father. Period. That is how I interpret Scripture. God Bless Everyone....Peace.

amazing. You have again provoked thoughtful and honest answers by asking the question politely.

Now, my story.

I am totally non-LDS, in 1995 was living in an LDS world in rural Wyoming. A preacher starts ranting about the Mormans, and I do the most pointed and humiliating thing possible, to him. I stood up, turned my back on him and walked out of church. U R an atheist, Mel, praps you don't know how major that was.

this preacher corners me at a local supermarket a couple of weeks later. He tells me that he respects what I did, (probably not true) and asks if I am ex-LDS. I am not, but I have great respect for LDS, the lady who directed the plays I was in as a kid, (Oklahoma, Wizzard of Oz, Sound of Music, Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof) is LDS, and her kids were all over this stuff (as assistants) and were always cool. My Dad's business partner was LDS, and Dad never questioned his integrity or work ethic. I attended an LDS church camp in Idaho (Titon Valley Boy's Ranch, easily found on a web search) that was overwhelmingly LDS but awesome fun. there was a Brooklyn Jew there who attended, he joked, because it gave him the opportunity to be a "Gentile" for a couple of weeks.
This preacher suggested that I make my own inqueries into the LDS, and to read books by LDS and non-LDS. He did it in such a way that I felt compeled to obey, interested to find what I'd learn. This went from a reading project to a college research paper. I attended LDS services a dozen times. I took notes and watched. And listened and learned.
My conclusions: Joseph Smith was a good-looking, charismatic, likable con man. His sexual appetites were huge, he had little morality. He sent one of his closest friends to Europe to recruit converts and told the man's wife that God wanted him (JS) to impregnate her. He was kicked out of several states for fraud, writing bad checks, etc.
Attending LDS services I found that JS was mentioned many times more than Jesus---about 19:7. The "Living Prophet" was mentioned about twice as often as Jesus. This may have been a defense mechanism against anti-Mormanism, but I recorded it---I was a journalism major.
Among the claims of LDS is the idea that horses existed in North America, iron had been mined, coins had been struck, historical events had occurred, that are totally false.
As a Christian I believe that many people who follow the LDS path are more likely to find salvation than many, many Christians.
But the focus of the LDS is more on their own doctrine than it is on the Bible. They are extrordinarily secretive about money, to the point where someone I know, who was hired to revamp LDS computer systems, was unable to do his job because of the extraordinary security precautions surrounding the LDS network. This guy is almost non-religious. The yearly budget of the Brigham Young University football team is a closely-held church secret. I could go on.
Cults are always secretive about money. LDS take that to greater heights.
I could go on, but must go to work. In the whole scheme of things, I do not believe that LDS are more or less deserving of "salvation" than Christians, but do not believe that a cult formed by a con man is a healthy thing to be around. Books to recommend include fawn Brodie's "No Man Knows My history" and the book, "Secret Ceremonies" that was written by a somewhat flaky woman who was dying, but it offers amazing insights.

Gotta go---see ya---Brian

yeah, what they said. Really, they all had great answers. But still, here is my two cents. You may somewhere that we think that Joseph did MORE that Christ himself. Wrong. Honestly, there is a scripture in the Doctrine and Covenants that said that we believe that Joseph did more for the salvation of men SAVE JESUS CHRIST ONLY. We don't worship him. Thanks for the question. We need sincere questions about us....
