Tomorrow night will be the first time I meet my boyfriend's (of 2 months) son. He is 5, and he also has Down's Syndrome. He's visiting his father for a few months, then going back to his mother (they share custody). I'm not sure how to act, or what to do, because I've never dated someone with a child before.

First off... when you talk to him, it's best to get down on his level (by getting down on a knee) and don't baby talk him. If he doesn't react or give you any feedback, sometimes Downs children are very withdrawn and live in their own little World, so don't be offended or be surprised by this mannerism.

Sometimes Downs children are brilliant, but withdrawn. So don't prejudge anything.

It's best to go in there with an open mind. React to whatever happens, and just enjoy the experience. Don't force it, flow with it.

You'll do fine, no worries...

Have fun!

Well im single with 2 kids and the best advice I can give you is just be nice to the child. Play with him, ecknowledge him, talk to him. Treat him like a person, not like a little kid, dont talk like he has something wrong with him. If you feel uncomfortable, let your man know, but definitely be interested in the child. I have worked with kids with DS, they are very sweet. Bring a coloring book and crayons if you want to get to know him, kids love that. I have a 7 and 5 yr old. Goodluck!

Just be friendly and play with him. When I was little I loved when people would put their hand out for a hand shake when meeting me. It made me feel like a grown up. Try doing that.

Be yourself, don't be nervous about it, just be polite and patient with the child, seeing that he has downs.
It should all work out, don't try too hard to say or do the right thing, this may come off as phony, BE YOURSELF.
