I think they are discouraged...after all we believe that Jesus turned water into wine, so if Alcohol is a sin we wouldn't acknowledge him doing.

From the surahs I read I came to interpert them meaning that they are paths that can lead to sin..but they themselves are not sinful...such as drinking alcohol can lead to domestic abuse which is bad but having a beer isn't bad. So i see no wrong in having and occasional drink and playing poker every now and then

Servant-Yes but if you do it and don't go down the path then there is no harm done...I see it more as a fatherly suggestion not as a command

Also I have read and reread the Surahs you have posted....they say NEVER say that you should never drink outright. They say that to do so MAY, you'll be risking falling into satans path. and like I said..I believe that in Islam that if you drink and still pray and be a good muslim, Allah will not punish you

Alcohol is detrimental to your health especially your liver. Alcohol befogs the mind and prevents rational thinking. Alcohol causes road accidents and innocent lives lost. Alcohol increases the occurance of domestic violence. Alcohol addiction causes financial ruin.

The Holy Quran, 2.219: They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: "In them is great sin, and some profit, for men; but the sin is greater than the profit." They ask thee how much they are to spend; Say: "What is beyond your needs." Thus doth Allah Make clear to you His Signs: In order that ye may consider.

The Holy Quran, 5.90: O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan's handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper.

The Holy Quran, 5.91: Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer: will ye not then abstain?

Many of grow up in societies where drinking is second nature to most people. Alcohol is staple in some societies, among an increasing number of people. It is also becoming an irreplaceable component of "having fun" and partying. No get together seems complete without alcohol. Tequila shots over the bar counter, vodka and vodka lime for beginners.

It can be difficult to deal with an environment where peer pressure is overpowering - which is almost always is. But consider this: Drunk people embarrass themselves in public and in front of friends. They have little control their actions or their words. One friend of mine nearly died because he walked onto a busy street in his drunken stupor. Another friend was raped by her boyfriend while she was asleep/hungover.

You have a million reasons to stop drinking - not just for yourself but for your friends and family...and especially the innocent stranger who might get hurt by your actions during a drunken stupor. You'll feel healthier - it's a guarantee and you'll save money to do other cool stuff.

God gives us instructions because He is All Knowing. Everything in Islam has a practical and healthy reason behind it..some of which we are aware of and others we're not but they're for our own good. God says in the Holy Quran - there is some good in alcohol but the bad outweighs the good.

Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi #3643, narrated Abdullah ibn Umar ; Abdullah ibn Amr

Allah's Messenger said, "If anyone drinks wine Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he repeats the offence Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he again repeats the offence Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he repeats it a fourth time Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, and if he repents Allah will not forgive him, but will give him to drink of the river of the fluid flowing from the inhabitants of Hell."

Alcohol and Gambling are the handiwork of Satan and should be avoided completely to prevent tempetation and leading down the path of sin...If you're a Muslim and you're drinking and gambling, you have much to learn about Islam in depth. There is some benefit in both, but the harm is greater than the benefit and therefore completely prohibited

Surah 2:219
They ask you (O Muhammad ) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your needs." Thus Allâh makes clear to you His Laws in order that you may give thought.

Surah 5:91
Shaitân (Satan) wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allâh and from As-Salât (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain?

It's not only about going down the path that makes it a sin, it's about what can lead to the path that also makes it a sin.

If you have a table with a ball on top and didn't want that ball to roll off the table, then you wouldn't move the table at any angle because it would result in the ball rolling off...Rolling off the table is sin, and tipping the table over leads the ball towards the path of sin...therefore tipping the table over is a sin itself....plain mathematical and philosophical logic

Alcohol women and gambling are all forbidden in Islam. Unless you have the money and can go somewhere that other Muslims can't see you unless they are in disobedience too.
Sinners are sinners no matter what brand name you put on them.

The Qu'ron even says that drinking and gambling do have benefits for men, and the prohibition against them is not a strong one, but they are still prohibited.

apostle Paul said;--a little wine for the stomachs sake is OK,not a direct quote. drinking in excess is NOT OK. be not drunken. as a christian, i believe a little wine with a meal is OK. even an occasional drink is OK, but i don't. i also believe it would not be wrong to use wine in communion instead of grape juice.

there is no verse in qu'ran stipulates clearly that alcohol & gambling are outright prohibited(both were practiced by Muhammad himself, see www.islamexplained.com),what muslim scholar do is they refer to weak hadiths to prohibit them, but i wonder if these acts are so bad & evil why muhmmad had done them in his life, don't say he did before he was prophet, since a will-be prophet must be clean of all devil acts!!!???

If we spend our time worrying about drinking and gambling, we won't have the time to worry about important stuff. Hey, maybe that's a good thing.
