Think of a small onion as about the size of a golf ball or 1/4 cup diced. I would use about 1 cup diced - assuming the recipe has you cutting them; otherwise you might just quarter a larger one.

a medium onion is about the size of a baseball... a large is the size of a softball... so small would be about ping pong sized. if you only have medium/ large onions, i would say two smal equal one medium. (most stores carry mediums)

they probably call for small because the flavor ofthe onion is different, not as spicy-- some say sweeter

If there are a little smaller then a baseball I would use three instead of four, small will be slightly bigger then golf balls. It would be better to use slightly less then use to much and ruin the recipe.

Medium would be about the size of a regular MacIntosh apple. Small would be about the size of a golf ball.
