A 17 year old can get married with his/her parent's consent, also. Does your "logic" apply there, also?
A 17 year old girl gets married to an 18 year old. She doesn't want to stay married and asks for a divorce.
Since her mom signed the papers for her to get married at 17, with your thinking, the mom should become the 18 year old's wife in the 17 year old's place because she signed for the 17 year old, correct?
Or does that sound as stupid as your question?

Yes, the parents have to pay the bank loan if he doesn't pay. That is what co-signing a loan is all about. If the person taking out the loan defaults, then you have to pay. As for the mumbling about a 17 year old being signed to go into the Marines, that is his choice. Of course, his parents don't finish his 4 years. If he doesn't finish his 4 years, he will be AWOL an probably sitting in some military prison for a lot longer than 4 years. By the way, they signed at 17 for HIM to go into the service at 18.

Because the parents are giving the 17 yr old permission to join the Marines when they sign for him. Just like when they give him permission to do anything else.
When they sign for a loan they are signing stating that they will take responsibility for the loan if the kid doesn't. And any parent who signs for a loan for a kid had better be sure that the kid has the maturity and responsibility to follow through and pay the loan.

He can finish his four years. He just doesn't WANT to.
If he COULDN'T finish, he'd get a medical discharge and you wouldn't be here complaining that your nephew changed his mind.

Rules differ, but if college kid doesn't pay the co-signers are liable.
