My mother and Aunt live in another state and have just purchased their first computers. It's an emachine T3616. They are familiar with Microsoft Word and cannot find it. I am many miles away and have windows xp and they refuse to get internet access. They say their computer came with window Vista but also say they have a disc that says Vista upgrade which they have not yet installed. Can anyone explain this to me and if they install the Vista upgrade disc will it then put Microsoft Word on their computer? Is it possible that Vista Basic does not have Word? Thanks in advance!!!!

Thank you everyone for your great answers. The thing that worked fast and best was from the first response. I had never realized that Word was in Task Launcher, it was right there. They were so happy when I called and told them, when they found it, it was everything they were familiar with!
Thank you to everyone!

I found a word processing program on my new computer with Vista basics that is the same format at Word under Microsoft Works Task Launcher. It seemed to be kindof hard to find and I came across it by accident, but it is the same as using Word

No version of Vista contains MS Word. MS Word is part of MS Office, which is a completely different product. MS Word has never been included with any version of Windows. MS Office is rarely installed on computers, since it's so expensive. If your mother and aunt specifically ordered a computer with MS Office pre-installed (and not the trial version) then they should have it, but odds are that they didn't. It's not even an option for most PC manufacturers. They can try using WordPad, or they can possibly order a copy of OpenOffice for free (or a nominal fee), but other than that their only option is to purchase MS Office.

Vista is the engine that processes commands.
Word is part of the Microsoft Office package which issues commands that Vista processes.
They are two separate and distinct pieces of software.
If your aunt wishes to purchase the office package, she can try this for a start:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_sw/103-8629925-7179044?initialSearch=1&url=search-alias%3Dsoftware&field-keywords=Microsoft+Word

She should be sure whatever she buys will run on Vista. Some older programs will not.

I have Vista basic and it includes Works. This is similar to Word but has very few of Word's capabilities.
