Is he that powerful?

It seems that God tormented Job- killed all of his children, took his land, sacrificed his oxen, and covered him head-to-toe in painful, burning boils- to teach Satan a lesson about faith, yet God, being omniscient, should have known that torturing Job would serve absolutely no purpose as anything but a testament to cruelty and that Satan, being Satan-like, would have found the "lesson" to be perfectly hysterical. Was God trying to make Satan even more arrogant by torturing another for him? Or did Satan trick God, thus taking away his omnipotence and rendering him, well... ungodly? Or was God just being a hypocrite, knowing that his torment of Job would change nothing but enjoying the power he had to do it anyway?

Please explain this to me as best you can. I cannot see a good side to it however it is interpreted.

Maxx - If God is a human than there is no possibility that he is perfect or immortal. You are one of few Christians who has told me that God is human. Why you cannot see that this automatically eradicates God's godliness is beyond me.

Secondly, how could Job have believed in Jesus Christ? Come on, Maxx, if you're going to argue a point read the books first; have some knowledge about the information. Jesus Christ was born more than 2,000 years after Job died! He didn't even have a clue who or what Jesus Christ was. The same case can be said for his knowledge of God but that is another matter entirely.

I'm not trying to be mean, Maxx, but you asked what was wrong with your response. Those are two things I could find for you.

Allen, dear, he didn't return the children that had been lost to Job. Haven't you read the book? Do you think that having a new child makes up for one taken tragically from you? By the time he gave Job anything he was an old, decrepit man.

Answer me this - IF your God is omniscient then he must know everything, right? So why take Satan up on some evil dare and test Job? Why didn't God just know Job was and would be faithful (God can foresee everything, correct?) Why give in to childish dares from someone he created to be a jerk? He knew what Satan would dare, how Job would be tortured for 18 YEARS, how he'd react, etc.

That, or he couldn't have been God. Why put Job through all of that?

Others here have explained how this was a test for Job (not for God to see how Job would act, but for Satan, and Job himself, to see how Job would act, for Job to prove to himself and Satan how true his faith in God and Jesus Christ is, because we know that God already knows everything), and I'll just add that NOBODY trick God. (I wish we could use bold and italics here.) God is a PERFECT, IMMORTAL human, and therefore knows everything and therefore can never be tricked.

RESPONSE TO VOTERS:

Okay, what's with the dorks who voted down on this answer? What is it that you think is "wrong" (not really, but just to you) with it?

RESPONSE 1 TO THRICE:

Okay, Thrice, so are you saying you think the definition of the word -human- somehow means "mortal and imperfect"? No, it doesn't! It simply refers to the kind of living being something/someone is. For example, God is not a cat, is he? He's not a dog, is he? Not a horse, goat, or fish, either, is he? Is he some other kind of animal? No. Is he some kind of undefined "wind" of "raw power"? NO! Then wouldn't it make sense that he's a person just like us--EXCEPT that he's PERFECT and can do anything (except those silly trivial things like "building a rock so big that he can't lift it," ya know) and knows everything (unlike us IMperfect, MORTAL people)? YES! What else is there? Remember, the word -human- doesn't mean "imperfect" or "immortal"!

The definition of the word -human- doesn't say anything about "not possible to be a god." The defininition of the word -god- and -God- doesn't say anything that means "could not be a person"!

In fact, there IS a scripture that teaches that we're created in the image of God. My goodness, it's in Genesis! You know that one, don't you? And the prophets even see God and Christ, and they're people! Perfect people, though. Another scripture mentions the kind of bodies God and Jesus Christ have. That's in Doctrine and Covenants 130:22. There are others, as well.

But, Thrice, we didn't really mean for this to be a discussion about mortal humans and the PERFECT humans that are God and Jesus, did we? This about Job, so let's move on to him now.

Okay, yeah, I meant Job's faith in God the Father, rather than Jesus Christ. (But maybe he DID have faith in Jesus' birth as a future event, anyway, as many other people did.) There were people who knew that Christ was going to be born some time down the road. Those were the prophets who testified of that. They hadn't seen him yet, but they still believed. Why did they believe? Have you heard of Christmas? How do you think there were people who knew what the Star of Bethlehem meant? And have you heard of [x years] BC--BEFORE CHRIST? How do you think those people who counted those years knew of that?

Now the other thing: Why would Job believe in God the Father? Well, the same question can be asked of anyone else who believes in God but who hasn't seen him. You sounded like you believe in God (whatever form you thought he came in, anyway). Right? Well, have you seen him? Why do you believe in God?

Bust besides that, Job was a PROPHET. In case you didn't already know, a prophet is someone who has talked with God the Father personally, and then has been given the authority by God to speak for him. If you had talked to God the Father personally, wouldn't YOU believe in him? It's no wonder God knew he could show Satan how strong Job's love for and faith in God was. Job loved God so much that he wouldn't ever let all those bad things that God was allowing to happen to him get in the way of his faith in and following of him!

(And, by the way, God may just HAVE told Job about this Jesus Christ who was going to be born later, as he did with those other prophets who learned about that before it happened.)

And, lastly, Thrice, how about you don't assume that people haven't read up on this or that just because you haven't learned things the same way they did? "Have some knowledge about the information…" PLEHHH! Kind of rude, isn't that, a bit?

RESPONSE 2 TO THRICE:

Hey, Thrice, apparently you didn't pay very good attention to what Allen said. He DID say that God already knew Job (and yes, God does know everything). This wasn't for God to see how Job would react! This was for Satan to see it, and also for Job, himself, to see, yes, because God did already know how Job would be even without the test. It WASN'T some kind of "evil" dare! Remember, God doesn't DO evil things to us, but he doesn't break people's agency (or "free will"), so he ALLOWS bad things to happen to us if someone else is choosing to do them.

God will, of course, save us from those bad things from time to time, depending on what his purposes and plans are. We don't always know why God chooses when to save or not to save someone from something bad that someone chooses to do, but we know that it's all part of his perfect plan for us. The bad can end up being for our benefit in the end, although we may definitely not see that now, or understand how or why. (Yeah, it doesn't seem to make sense at first, does it? But in God's perfect plan it will.)

And by the way, Thrice, this person isn't just "my God" or just "your God." He's one God the Father for everyone, regardless of which religion gives him what name (like God or Heavenly Father here, or Allah there, etc.), just as Jesus Christ is one God the Son for everyone, regardless of which name he gets called by people from whichever religion (like Jesus here, Jehovah there, etc.).

Thrice, are you sincerely searching for where the truth is, or are you like some people I've run into, who just want to bash just to bash?

It is evident that you know the story, but not the reason.

God proved to Satan that Job was not just being faithful to God just because God made Job's life cushy before the test.

Satan said to God, "No wonder Job worships you, you give him a comfortable life.!" But if you took the good life away from him, he will smite you and hate you!!
(Doesn't this sound a bit like some people today?)

God proved to Satan that Job worshiped him because He was loved by Job and that he was a faithful and righteous man. Job stood the test. Job didn't like or understand what was happening to him,but hew stayed faithful to God anyway.

After the test God restored EVERYTHING TWO FOLD back to Job.
This is also a testament for what God does for others.
The Lord gives, he takes away, he gives again.....
The Lord takes things away from us to remind us it all belongs to him in the first place.
God is the God of second chances.
If God gave us everything we could ever want, would we even need God after that?
God likes to remind us from time to time that we need Him.

Do you know some people who turn their backs on God when God starts taking things away?

How many people do you know that stays faithful to God during hard times? These are the people who God rewards in the end.

God didn't do anything to hurt Job Satan did. Learn this lesson.
God allowed it as He does with all of us to prove Satan wrong. Satan made a claim that Job wouldn't worship God if he lost all his worldly possessions. Of course God knew His man.
Once Satan gave up on changing Job, God returned everything Job had plus some extra.
God is God. Satan is Satan. How are you doing in Job's place?

It depends what you are. I am a christian and in the Bible Lucifer was the most powerful angel that God create. But Lucifer wanted more power than God so God banished him from heaven and made hell for Lucifer. Then Lucifer became Satan. It all Depends on what you believe. But man you did do a lot of research for this question. Oh and I don't like either.

Satan didn't know what Job would do.

Satan told God that Job would curse Him if God took away everything He had.

God gave satan permission.

All that Job went through he never cursed God.
Even his friends kept telling him that he must have done something against God for these things to be happening to him.

Epilogue
7 After the LORD had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. 8 So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. You have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has." 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite did what the LORD told them; and the LORD accepted Job's prayer.

10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before. 11 All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the LORD had brought upon him, and each one gave him a piece of silver [a] and a gold ring.

12 The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job's daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so he died, old and full of years.

God knew that Job would be able to make it through all of those trials and he also knows that, with a positive attitude, anything that does not kill you, makes you stronger, and God does not think in the short term He thinks in the eternal perspective. The story of Job also serves as an example for our lives. We like Job have Satan trying to tempt us and get us to fall away from God but we like Job must keep a positive attitude and keep our trust in God and then when we do we will find that what we have lost we will have gained back and then some.

The story of Job also serves as a way for us to understand why God allows Satan to stay around, like a body builder needs weights to be able to weight train we need those trials to be able to grow. If you read through the story of Job you will notice that he got to a point that he was ready to give up but he never stopped trusting in God. Though we do not have any record of it, I do not think that it would be too much to assume that as result of those trails and Job being able to endure through them, Job's faith in God was increased and he was probably better able to endure through any other trials that might have come his way latter on in life.

Another way you can look at Job's experience is, to be able to see that there can be a good side to any situation even if it is just being better able to endure through life's trials.

i have never understood it. some people will tell you that god was proving that job would never curse him...he was testing him...showing satan how wrong he was. none of these things make any sense.

why would god have to prove anything? why would he allow all of those horrible things to happen to someone he considered righteous?
sure after it was all over he replaced everything...i hope that i would not be so easily replaced. i know that my husband wouldn't be. or my children.

this is the kind of thing that makes me wonder if we aren't here as some sort of joke. what a weird sense of humor.

OK who is gullible here in this story... god is good, god is love... so they (christians and catholic) say... the bible also says that Satan will be called god of this earth... and will deceive many... now you see a story where god is acting like god of this earth.... (this story is exactly what is done to people spiritually) who is satan fooling? and do they not act like Job.... he fools the people who would go through this for religion and call him god...
