I can't really remeber what it feels like. I'm going tommorow and I need to know if it's uncomfortable/painful, if I'm going to be miserable for the rest of the day, etc.. My dentist told me it's not that serious, but it's starting to crack (the old filling)..I went to the dentist last week, he said I could have come back two months from now, but because I have time off now, I decided to go the following wee. Anyway, just wondering if the less severity of it has to do with how painful or not the out come is, thanks!

As long as you do not have an immunity to the novacaine you should be just fine during the procedure. Usually when I have work done the numbness lasts for a few hours, by the time that wears off the pain is pretty much gone. Depending on the type of filling the dentist may also give you a prescription for pain. Do NOT take Ibuprofen as this will thin the blood and make it worse.

Okay so everyone is saying that dentist uses novacaine, but they dont anymore... its very out dated.

The dentist will give you local anesthetic ( numbing shot) and he will make sure its in effect before he begins, so you have nothing to worry about.

If you have a fear of needles you can ask your dentist to put a topical anesthetic first ( its a prenumbing gel) on the injections site so that you dont feel the intial injection.

DONT WORRY ... they are professionals and they are there to make you comfortable, dont hesitate to ask any questions or to request things that will make you more comfortable. There should be no pain at all after your done unless you accidently bite your lip or the side of your mouth from the numbness . Just try not to eat for 1-3 hours after your appointment.

If you haven't had one for a while you will be surprised how un-painful they are. The dentist numbed the heck out of you with anesthetic shots. The drills are high speed so you do not feel a horrible cutting feeling. The filling starts with a painkiller cushion on the root. By the time the numbness goes away there is no pain at all.

good news! they are virtually pain free today. The dentist will swab your gums with a liquid called Bananas. After it works for a couple minutes, he/she will inject with anesthetic. After that takes effect, the work begins. Keep in mind dear one, that you can raise your hand and the dentist will stop working to give you an additional shot if you begin feeling any pain at all. So you don't have to suffer. The numbness lasts for a couple of hours; long after he/she is done with the work. Don't worry at all. But do ask for mercury-free fillings (the white ones) to avoid long-term problems in your over-all health. Good luck!

It's not pain free. Your Dentist makes a big difference in how much pain you suffer. I happen to have one that is very gentle. The worst is while the numbness is wearing off. That usually takes an hour or two. Good Luck!!!

I've never had an issue with getting a tooth filled, it's the novacaine that bothers me. I'm needle-phobic and having one in my mouth is not fun...then having a numb face for several hours is a drag. It doesn't hurt, but it's not fun, ya can't speak well, and drooling can be a problem because you can't feel your tongue or lips (depending on where they stick you).

Otherwise, it's not a big deal...if you have no issue with needles, then you'll just feel weird for a while 'til the drug wears off.

If the dentists do it right it is not painful at all. The only problem with it is, you get a lot of spit in your mouth.
