Im going to try and answer this like a proffesional instead of just giving you an answer at first. More appropriately we need to know why you even want to rev the engine up without using the gas pedal.

Anyway, to answer you:
You can manually rev the engine by pulling back on the throttle bracket in the engine bay itself. You may or may not have seen a mechanic do this before.

Look for where the intake side is and there is usally a brass colored bracket with the throttle cable attached to it.Pull it back slowly to rev the engine up. Just be carefull not to pull it fully open and over rev it.

It is a pretty simple procedure, pop your hood open and look at the top side of your engine block. You will see what looks like a valve with a small metal cable attached to it. At the other end of this cable is your gas pedal. Pull on this cable or push in the direction of the cable on the anchor that holds the cable to the valve.

This simulates the exact motion of pressing on the gas pedal.
