I am applying to rent an apartment and the advertisement said that there was a credit check. The application doesn't ask for my social security number. There is no application or credit check fee. Can they check my credit without my SSN?

No they can't pull your credit without your SSN. It's the SSN that makes you unique.

They can run a rental history check, to see if you broken any rental leases in the past. But a credit check will need your SSN#. Check your credit report to see if the property management company is listed there as a credit inquiry.

When I used to work for Wells Fargo, I could pull credit with a name, address and date of birth.

It is tricky because many people have similar names but they could just reference your date of birth and last known address .
