I live in New York, and the no cell phone rule is enforced. I see many people using blue tooth. Do you think they are still distracted? I've heard form other users that they have to still dial the number on the phone, or use their phone and that it's not completely hands free. What is the difference?

get over this cell phone bs folks.

EVERY accident, except mechanical failure, is caused by a distraction. People talking to other people in the car, people watching their kids, men watching the chic walking down the street, women watching the men, people eating/drinking while driving, people tuning their radios/nav system, etc.

the only way to prevent this is to take the bus/train/plane/boat/cab whatever.

either u drive or u do something else. If u do both then u are a potential accident waiting to happen.

AND it doesn't matter what the something else is.

The whole notion of hands-free cell phone use is totally and completely bogus. The distraction is not in holding the phone in your hands. If that were the case, you could make the same argument for hands-free driving: that gripping the steering wheel is too distracting. Obviously the hands-free law is just a politcal ploy to satisfy the phone companies, while making it look like the politicians have addressed the issue, which they have NOT. It is just as distracting to be talking on a phone whether you are holding it in your hand or not. It's not the holding it that is distracting, it is the concentrating on the conversation that is distracting, and that has NOTHING to do with holding the phone or not.

However, politicians being politicians they do stupid things and pass stupid pointless laws and we, the voters, let the idiots get away with it.

Let me see how the hell you do hands-free text messaging. Jerks.

most phones that are blue tooth are also voice dial capable. using blue tooth with voice dial, I just tap the button on my earpiece once and say a name and "ta da" no looking away from the road, my hands are free to drive, etc. I think this is a lot less distracting than people eating, smoking, changing cd's/radio stations, etc. I obviously wouldn't get into any big discussions while on the phone driving, but if i need to call home to say i'm running late or to check if i need to pick anything up on the way home, well, no big deal....

it's no more distracting to talk hands free than it would be to be these crazy soccer moms with HUGE suvs full of kids screaming and yelling and all that. or to be the business man with 30 million thoughts flying through his head about all the things he needs to do that day, or whatever, so are we going to try to make it illegal to drive with kids in the car or to think while driving? I don't think so.

Yes, you still are distrated while talking on the bluetooth, but less dangerous because you dont have to use you hand holding the phone. If your cell is voice active then you don't have to use your hand to dial a number. It's safer but still is dangerous.

honestly if you are chit chatting away, whether on a cell or with the bluetooth you arent paying attention, fully, to what is in front of you. i personally think the bluetooth is ridiculous looking and when someone walks up to me with one of the on i never know if they are on the phone or talking to me.
