I read this Quote, what do you think?
"Civilized people do not put children to death for what their fathers have done. Yet aborting a child conceived by rape is doing that exact thing"

There is only a 3% pregnacy rate of rape victims, so this is not really a overwhelming problem....but,
I thought what if there where famous people concieved from rape and they had been aborted?
Here are some I found:

Faith Daniels -- talk show host
of the TV show Dateline, A
Closer Look, and Today (among
others). She describes coming
to terms with the fact that her
conception resulted from rape in
a People Magazine article.

Fredrick Douglass -- former
slave and abolitionist. He details
his conception by rape in his
writing, Narrative of the Life of
Fredrick Douglass, available

Jesse Jackson -- Reverend
whose mother was 16 when he
was conceived and whose father
was a 30-year old next door
neighbor who was already
married

Tracy Carter Jennieve --

was raped at 16 years old.

Does everyone deserve a chance at life?
should we be able to pick and chose who may or may not live?

You made a good point, and this of course is just a small sampling of great people who were given life, not death, even though they were the product of rape.

All these people who say they believe in abortion can thank their lucky stars that they were born under just the right circumstances and that their bodies weren't torn, piece by piece, out of their mother's womb. Lucky for them, they were wanted.

I have said this before: Find me one person who wishes they had never been born. No matter their race or their bodily afflictions; no matter how much poverty they may be in or how rotten their parents may be, you would find that every person is glad that they have lived and were given life, even those who currently may wish they were dead.

Can YOU imagine never having been born? Can you imagine having never made a contribution to your world or your society, or never having used your great singing or artistic talent? For anyone to make the decision whether or not an innocent baby or fetus should be aborted is abusing their power over a living thing that has not yet developed their voice for their own decisions.

When a 12 year old is raped and she gets pregnant, is it in the best interests of this traumatized child to bear a baby? It is at this point that the question becomes muddled. This girl's parents must decide which is more important: the life/sanity of their daughter or the embryo. Of course the embryo has rights. But so does the girl. This is an incredibly tough decision and one which affects the future of everyone involved in a big way. But the life of the young girl trumps the life of the embryo. And, actually, those who believe it doesn't are lacking in humanity. This is not an isolated example. Child-rape happens more often than you would care to think. All situations are different, and pro-choice is not the same as pro-abortion.

From a practical standpoint, based on the statistical drop in crime in the decades following Rowe vs Wade, there's a case to be made that much more good has come than bad in preventing unwanted children from coming.

Using your argument, imagine if we ban contraception - how many more great people we would have. Or better still, make it mandatory for every woman of childbearing age to do what it takes to get pregnant - see how many more great people the world will have.

What you need to do is to balance it with the amount of bad that is avoided. If a million 12 year olds are forced to get pregnant, we may get a rocket scientist or two, but the good will be more than overshadowed by bad.

ps - I wouldn't use Revd Jesse Jackson to bolster your argument - he actually makes my case.

pps - am curious how you feel about terminating ectopic pregnancies, or should these be continued too? After all we wouldn't take a heart from a 10 year old child to save his 30 year old mother. Do you feel that the same about preserving thelife of an ectopic fetus at the expense of themother's?

Pro-choice- and in the case of rape the woman can choose if she wants to carry the baby or not. I feel that abortion is called for if the mother chooses to abort in the cases that she was raped or the fetus has severe abnormalities that would lead to fetal death upon birth. But only up until the 10th week past lmp or 8th week development.

edit-do you also realize that a woman if she had the child from a rape that everytime she looked at that child she would be reminded of that rape. If she carried it every kick would make her think of how half this child is part of "that man who raped her".

I understand that any baby can grow up to be somebody great. But the thing people need to understand is that a woman who is raped, isn't exactly in the mindset to have a child. She is hurt, scared, and has a huge responsibility that she has to come to terms with. I also think that a person can have an abortion for selfish reasons , but I will never make that assumption for everyone who has aborted a child because of rape, because I have never been in that situation, and I don't have that right to judge ANYone.

putting a child to death would be killing a being with thoughts, feelings and the ability to feel pain. Killing a developing fetus before 20 weeks is not (it cannot feel pain and does not have the ability to think).

Every child that is meant to be born will be born.

I'm guessing you have never been raped. Anyone who has never been through the trauma of rape has no right to tell a women who has been violated and humiliated that their rights over their own body are going to be revoked for the next 9 months because of someone else's crime.

You have a very legitimate point - who are we to decide who lives and who dies?

Rape - I've never been, thank God, and never will be, knock on wood! I can't imagine the horror/s of it. One thing is for sure, a rape victim is shaken up psychologically, and perhaps isn't best fit to raise a child as a result of that rape. The child would be innocent, yes, and would be a constant reminder to the mother of what happened to her. She may mistreat her child, who never deserves it.

I would like to see rape victims give birth to their babies, but in that case, perhaps adoption is best for everyone? At least, this is my thinking.

Should a woman choose to have an abortion due to rape, I wouldn't blame her. Should she choose abortion because the pregnancy jeopardizes her health, this is wise. Should she choose abortion for any other reason, she is committing murder to the most innocent victim.

This really is a delicate issue.

And how many unwanted children and/or children of rape went on to become violent criminals because they're children of rape or they were unwanted?

This is not about punishing the father, who probably couldn't care less about the woman he raped or the embryo she may be carrying. This is about ensuring the rape survivor doesn't have to suffer anymore than she already has. It's another reason rape victims should get emergency contraception so we don't have to have this debate!

The problem with what you say is equating a fetus with a baby.

A fetus before 22 weeks is not capable of thought or suffering enough to even care if it was aborted.

The rape argument is just another reason of many we need to keep abortion legal under 22 weeks.

sorry theres nothing you can say to convince me that the "rights" of a bunch of cells is more important than sparing a rape victim the further trauma of having to carry their rapists baby to term. You are very cruel if you would judge them for their decision in a situation like that
