I think they're both appropriate for different things. If I can get something locally, I'll go for it, because transportation is such a waste of energy and I am pretty sure that there's probably nothing ethically wrong with how it was produced if I buy it locally.
However, there are a lot of things that I can't get locally, mostly food items such as coffee, and I will buy those fair trade.

Both. I will only buy fresh fruits and veggies from the farmers market. They're fresher, healthier and supports the local economy. However, to my knowlege, coffee is not grown in Ohio or any neighboring state. Therefore, I purchase Fair Trade. Yes, it's more expensive, than say, a can of Maxwell House, but it's worth it. However, when money is tight, I will buy canned, non-Fair Trade coffee when it's on sale. (Recently, the grocery store had the store brand of 13 oz canned coffee on sale three cans for $5. I don't drink coffee much, but I was kinda low and since it was technically next to nothing, and definately 50% off the regular price, I figured why not.)

If by local trade you mean prohibition of non-local trade, then I have to go with fair trade.

Local Trade for food + fishing bait, 'cos my Dad's grocery store keeps a roof over my head...... and they usually give better customer service than Supermarkets.

fairtrade! firstly becase i think it benefits people who are very poor. I think if we help those people and if they get benefits e.g employment or if their children get a good education then things like terrorism etc will be rooted out! Local trade will keep on benefiting because of the reach it has and industry mostly goes for local trade products available throughout the yr.!

Local.
Uses less gas for transportation and supports local families; plus fresh food tastes better.
Obviously I still buy plenty of stuff that comes from outside of my state - that is inevitable.

All trade is fair trade. Why would someone enter into a trade if it wasn't fair to them? There's no such thing as unfair trade.
