I'm in Corpsman "A" school and I'm having trouble with it and I'm thinking of going undesignated, so I'm just generally wondering what it is like when your in the fleet or with the marines.

The main reason people flunk out of school is they don't study enough. You should be studying 12 hours per day on Saturday and Sunday if necessary. You need to come home from school and study for 3 or 4 hours every night.

I went to EMT school for 6 months. Some people had trouble learning and then suddenly it all made sense. Keep working at it as hard as you can. Practice with other students. Don't be a failure.

If you are put in the fleet you will end up in the engine room or as a boatswain mate. It isn't likely you would end up with the Marines or in the Medical division unless possibly you made it through almost all of the training.

If you are having trouble handling Class A school then let them know so you can be disenrolled and assigned back to the fleet. Because, after you graduate, there will be too many instances in which the lives and health of other human beings are in your hands. I spent thirteen years as a Hospital Corpsman. another twelve years as a Medical Service Corps officer. Eight of those twenty five years was with Fleet Marine Forces. Two of my assignments as a Hospital Corpsman with the fleet were on Independent Duty. You are "Doc". And if you cannot see yourself performing that vital role and position, don't finish "A" school.

It's a completely different scene, man. Nothing like the Navy. Because you are expected to be on the front lines with those guys, you get the same physical training. It's actually pretty unreasonable. They don't talk to you like you're a human being. Not that being in the Navy is a cake walk but the Marines are trained for a specific purpose, kill or be killed. You'll hear Ooh- rah Kill!!! all the time. It's really not good...I wouldn't recommend it, although those guys definitely need medics out there as this pointless war continues...it really just depends on you.

If you go green side you will have to keep up with the Marines. We expect a lot from our doc's, especially in Iraq.
