That really depends on what you consider upscale:

For instance, the Upper East Side has a lot of large, classic, prewar apartments and old money, apartments there run several million

Tribecca has a lot of lofts, and is probably a bit more expensive than Upper East, but doesn't have the old money that Upper East has.

The West Village is pricey, and the East Village is getting there.

Upper West Side would also be considered upscale, but still not as much so as Upper East.

I would have to say the most upscale parts of NYC are either Tribecca or the Upper East Side.

Depends on your definition of "upscale." Sutton Place is tops as far as price per square foot, privacy and view.
The Upper East Side, west of Lexington Avenue, is easily the best family friendly, upscale part of NYC. It also has the only decent public schools (a great indicator).

Downtown, like TriBeCa, and parts of SoHo, and Battery Park City, are also quite lovely.
There are also extremely upscale enclaves in the outer boroughs, but when people ask this question they are usually referring to Manhattan.

Upper East side is the only true "upscale" section of NYC. It's still old money.

maximum of massive apple is notably upscale these days with severe lease expenditures. the main upscale neighborhoods are SoHo, Tribeca, the West Village, the top West area and the top East area. the top East area is what maximum folk think of of as very upscale massive apple.

According to a map I saw of NYC where they indicated the most expensive areas of the city, the areas are the Upper Eastside and Battery Park.

I think it is the area surrounding the lower section of Central Park in Manhattan.
