I have never heard of anyone thinking of people being poor because they wear uniforms. However, I have also never heard of anyone sending their children to public school in a uniform either. Personally, I wouldn't send them to school in a uniform if it's not required. In a perfect world, children would not be made fun of or considered an outcast, but unfortunately it's not a perfect world. The reality is they will most likely be considered an outcast for wearing a uniform if it's not required. Although I do agree with you that uniforms are a good idea...they do make children look very neat and clean cut. However picking out your kids daily clothing is not that big of a task, it only takes a minute to do so. If your children are starting a new school, don't send them there with one strike against them from the beginning. Let them wear their regular clothes. They will feel much better and at ease while being the "new kid" in school. I have two stepsons that are starting public school (ages 7&8) this year after attending catholic school and they are very excited about not having to wear uniforms anymore.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying. For public schools with uniforms, the kids aren't thought of as poor. If, however, you're sending your kids to a public school that doesn't require uniforms, then yeah, I can totally see why kids would think your kids are poor. Wearing the same outfit (or similar outfits) every day suggests a lack of adequate clothing. The fact that they're uniforms doesn't mean they're poor- it's the wearing the same thing every day thing that suggests it. The idea of compromising in this case is a good one. While there's nothing wrong with wearing uniforms to school (I'm with you- they look sharp), it's unfair to send your kids to school only to be ridiculed for something beyond their control. Allowing them to add some regular nice t-shirts to their school wardrobe seems like it would solve the problem. Plus, it's not hurting anything.

When I went to school or now that my kids are in school I have never heard of anyone wearing a uniform when the school did not require one.
I think a child will stand out and be teased for being different and odd, rather than "poor". Just because it is not the "norm".

I don't understand why you would make them wear the uniforms if they are not required. Children en masse can be cruel, even if someone were absolutely perfect, kids could still find something to make fun of them about. Why would you send your kids to school with a strike against them right off the bat? They will be embarrassed and humiliated and end up resenting or hating you. Again, why do you want to do this?

Making your kids wear uniforms in a school that doesn't do uniforms is ridiculous. Wearing nice clothes is a different story.

In a school were there are no uniforms, I think it is just "weird" because it is not the normal. I have never heard anyone refer to uniforms as anything to do with financial state. I think if your kids do attend a public school (with no dress code) and continue to wear their uniform they will just stand out and be called odd! Anyone that stands out is considered strange......right or wrong that is life.

You are setting your kids up for humiliation. In the best of all possible worlds kids would not be cruel to anyone who is different but they are. Actually, in the best of all possible worlds the public schools would have uniforms but that's a whole different discussion. Buy the kids some jeans and T-Shirts and polos. They will be much happier.
