The California legislature has been wrestling with signing a budget for months now. They had to either cut must needed programs or raise taxes. Since the price of gas is draining the pocketbooks of many Californians it was decided that those least affected by a gas tax hike would be hybrid car owners. So effective January 1, 2008 all owners of hybrids will be taxed an additional quarter a gallon. Actually the way it will work is that when you buy gas at the pump the quarter per gallon will be included in the price. When you file your state income tax for 2008 in 2009 you will be given a credit for all the extra gas tax you paid in 2008 (with proper documentation) except for those who have a hybrid registered in their name.
I would like your opinion on this bill SB98556.

This bill was written by a democrat as a way to raise taxes. California passed this bill into law sometime last week after budget deal between democrats and Republicans

Sorry but it did not die a quick unless it happens to be repealed prior to its effective date of January 1 2008. I do not think this is likely to happen as it took about 3 month for California to pass a budget!!

If what you say is true, what incentive is there to buy a hybrid?

The gvmt giveth, the gvmt takes awayth.

Added Note: Does Mike know California is a very liberal state?

This sounds like the kind of boondoggle that results in the elction of weak Republican candidates.

The Repeublicans exploit these things to the hilt.

This bill is a very bad idea.

This bill needs to die a quick and merciful death.
