The recorder is a Magnavox MWR10D6 video recorder and the DVD player is AMW S99. I'm recording through a satellite box. I've tested the cables on the DVD player, they work fine and I've tried commercial DVDs that play back fine too. This AMW S99 is supposed to play back DVD recordables from what I've read on the Internet.

many recorders have built in features that only allow the DVD burned by the recorder to be played on the recorder. it is a pain...

many players won't play an R/W disc.
