i had a dream that i had a baby in my hand and the door bell rang, i put the baby on my older son, but there was a string attach to me and the baby, when i got to the door there were two detectives at the door, saying we are ready

Baby can represent a resposibility that is yours, but by putting it on your older son, it means your are trying to put off the resposibility on him. The string being attached represents conditions which hold you to that particular responsibility (baby).

It could be that you are mentally tied to some thing and if you don't get away from it soon you will have some legal problems. The baby might stand for the problem being small right now, your older son might mean that the problem will grow big if not taken care of. Detectives are a sign of the law, dressed like lawyers...Maybe you are putting off some thing small in your life that you should get done now. We all do this wait for tomorrow thing...But you know tomorrow never comes so the problem stays the same and grows and grows...Open your eyes now before it is to late...

I think it means that, you're older son in the dream is still treated like a baby. Then the baby you were holding and gave to your older son was him as a baby (how you see him).
Then when the 2 detectives came, there can be 2 scenarios:
1. it could be you're son when he is grown up, showing you what he can potentially be in his future and you need to let go and let him live his life.
2. it could be a sign telling the mom (you), that you need to let them become the person they are mean't to be and let them do things on their own :).

the string was probably an umbilical cord and the detectives were probably trying to cut it....
