Many vets are self-employed. As such, what they do with their time has a direct bearing on their income. The time they spend with you, examining your puppy, has a value. Look at it this way - if they were spending time with you for free, then they can't spend time with another, possibly paying, customer. That said, what they charge, etc. will vary from vet to vet and from what services you want. Some places have a basic wellness/first shots charge that is cheaper than a normal visit. Your best bet to find the cheapest is, of course, the yellow pages. But remember, the cheapest vet may or may not be the best vet for your situation, and also there is a vet in our area who advertises a very cheap 1st visit but when you get there he runs up the bill by recommending all kinds of products and services. You don't have to buy everything the vet recommends.

Yes, vets charge for visiting. Prices depend on what vet you go to. Puppy visits usually aren't that expensive though. My dog had puppies and I took all 7 of them to the vet for $30 to get checked out. Shots will cost more.

Your vet will more than likely charge you an examination fee every time they see your dog. To find out for certain and what the fee will be, trying calling and asking them. Some vets won't charge an examination fee for rescued animals.
