My 19 month old just got the chicken pox. I put on the cream but she doesn't understand she can't scratch. It is very stressfull for me, how can I make this an easy time for both of us? I have a 2 month old that also needs care, how can I care for both?

I have actually just moved to LA where no family is. I have a 13 year old niece that is living with me but she goes to school and then hangs out with friends. My boyfriend has kids, so he has to care for them

My daughter was around the same age when she got the chicken pox. It was awful. I stayed awake for 3 days to make sure she wasn't scratching. Scratching makes them worse. Everyone's suggest is great, here is mine. Buy a bottle of calamine lotion and soft water color paint brushes or eye shadow brushes. Put the calamine lotion in the refrigerator so that its nice and cold. Then paint each little spot with the lotion. It's cool and it stops the itch. Paint on the calamine lotion every 1 to 2 hours. I know it's a lot of work, but believe me, it works she had minimal itching and she doesn't have one scar.

The only suggestion that I can give at this point is to put socks on your daughter's hands and give her something warm to drink so that the chicken pox can go ahead and come out and you need to rub her down in calamine lotion. As for your two month old you are just going to have to keep them separated and keep your hands extra clean. Do you have any family that can watch your 2 month old while the 19 month old is going through the infectious stage? Keep us posted!

She's too young to understand that she can't scratch...so, you're going to have to buy her some gloves. Yes, this sounds ridiculous but it will help :) Rub her back for her, this will ease some of her stress and pat her to sleep...again this will help w/ the itching and maybe offer some relief. As for the 2mth old, put her down as often as possible. Hopefully, she is sleeping like a good little person.

Make sure you don't allow the 2-month-old to be exposed. I had chickenpox when I was barely six months old and I had a very severe case of it. It can be much more dangerous for babies.

Cut her fingernails really short and put gloves on her hands if she still scratches too hard. Oatmeal baths help with the itching. You can also try baby benadryl to help with the itch.
