Leg cramps are the first place your body targets when you are dehydrated. Drink lots of water! I recommend purified water and Mineral Water mixed 50/50. The Mineral Water is going to put back into the muscles the minerals they are losing on a daily basis. You must drink beyond your thirst to get the benefits of hydration.

I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body.

In the evening take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. Afterwards, if you have something shaped like a cylinder and made out of hard material (think of a large rolling pin you would use for pizza dough or something) place it under your leg and push down and roll it back and forth...this should massage the spasms out of your leg. It will hurt while you're doing it, but more so the type of pain that actually feels good, in the long run. Afterwards massage an analgesic cream into the area. You will start feeling better very quickly.

These are some of the common causes of leg cramps:
Muscle fatigue
Heavy exercising
Dehydration
High weight (not necessarily obesity)
Electrolyte imbalances (such as low potassium)
Medications (statins, prednisone, others...

Here are some things that may help:
Stay hydrated
Stretch regularly
Eat foods rich in potassium, like bananas
Gradually build up when exercising

Best way to make cramp go away:
Massage the cramped muscle
Stretch the muscle (gently!)
Take a hot shower or bath to warm and relax the muscle

If leg cramps are a chronic problem, he should be evaluated by a doctor to rule out an electrolyte imbalance. If they are very bad, the doctor can prescribe muscle relaxers.

I was having the same problem and after research realised that I was not taking enough salt in my diet. I now sprinkle just a little on my dinner and the cramps have gone. Get him to get a blood test for sodium. Low levels can cause leg cramps

Lots of things cause leg cramps. One is low in potassium. He could eat a banana to help it if that is the case or take potassium pills. Another could be Peripheral Artery Disease. If he starts to walk and it cramps up on him, have him go to a doctor to test him for Peripheral Artery Disease (blockage of the arteries or veins in his legs). Another could be from a low-carb diet - have him buy Seltzer water that contains quinine - that would help in that instance. Another could be Neuropathy from potential diabetes - have him checked for that. If he's on cholesterol medicine (a statin drug like Lipitor, Zocor, etc.), that can cause leg cramps. If he's very muscular in his legs, he could take a child's rolling pin (like a doll rolling pin) and roll it along his calves and see if that helps it go away. There could be many more reasons so the best bet is for him to go to his doctor and get it checked out.

It could be as simple as drinking more water. Another possible easy fix is calcium. One tab a day is enough to help cramping. If neither of these help, he should definitely see a doctor.

THis could be a case of shingles. I know people who have had it and the pain usually gets worse at night when you want to relax. Go to the doctor and have them check it out
