Please.... PLEASE.... if you cannot conceive a response within the specified confines of the hypothetical situation (i.e. no deific moral authority exists), refrain from posting. Meaning: if all you can think of to say is "but god DOES exist", don't bother answering!

And yes, I know "sin" is an offense against a deity, a purely spiritual concept, but I put it in quotation marks in the hopes that you'd understand it to mean, more broadly, "commit what you currently consider immoral acts".

If no supernatural being existed, then the term "sin" would cease to have meaning.

To answer your question, I would do whatever I darn well pleased and whatever my natural human instincts led me to do, BUT it could not be called a "sin" because sin is a purely spiritual term which requires a moral system to back it up which in turn God provides.

No God....no such thing as sin.

However, since there IS a God, even if chose not to believe in Him, my sins would still be counted against me since God's existence does not hinge upon my belief in Him. I would still be held responsible.

Good hypothetical!

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Everyone is human and sins, even Christians. But we also ask for forgiveness of our sins.

In your hypothetical scenario if God & the bible never existed, I would try to be a good person anyway. But I still wouldn't be perfect. I'm sure I would still make mistakes, or do things I know I shouldn't, or screw up sometimes. So not sure if that answers the question.

I'm religious, but if I were convinced that no supernatural authority existed, I wouldn't necessarily see it as an invitation to sin. I've always considered morality and religion to be completely separate issues. One need not believe in deities to be moral, and only a sociopath would refrain from harming others simply due to a threat of divine retribution. Even if I were convinced that God (and all gods) were nonexistent, it wouldn't give me license to go about harming others, which is what I believe sin is.

OK this is for all of you who think that Christians think that they don't sin...EVERYONE SINS!!!! and we know it!!! the thing is we are not a slave to it anymore. We are free from sin and the penalty thereof. We restrain from sinning purposely because WE LOVE GOD...end of story. By the way no one can live a righteous life that is why we need a savior.

If there were no God, there would be no such understanding as to what the concept of sin was. Without good there is no evil, no happy without sad, no pleasure without pain.

All things must have their opposite. That being said, the answer would be no because there would be no existence or understanding of sin just as things were in Eden before the fall.

does that mean you don't want me to cut and paste?

ohhhh - I've been waiting for that opportunity -I must say how ever I would cut and paste from rolling stone magazine and not the Bible!

as far as your question goes! they have been sinning all along ,Christians or not! even though God doesn't exist (and they know this) they judge they worship every thing that has to do with religion! and the Catholics warship the pope!

I'm sorry, I have to comment. I never knew there were so many crazy people walking the earth. Did something arrest their development? Don't they even care about their fellow man? If I were god, I would send all of these people to a place where they couldn't infect the good people that can manage to regulate themselves without parental supervision. I'd never, ever, ever ever ever, leave them with the keys to the house when I was away. Damn religious hooligans. They need people to control them, because by their own admittance they can't control themselves.

I rather doubt it. I have a hard time with anyone who steals and I'm loyal to a fault.

Edit. ZC isn't talking little sins and omissions we commit everyday--we're talking the big ones.

My families name is on the line, so no I would remain unchanged.
My community expects certain moral actions from it's citizens - so I will (would) follow them unchanged also.
GOD actually just keeps me focused only on long term care for my soul.
Care for my body, in feeding and protection, needs my community and family so I will never intentionally jeopardize this by pissing them off.
