It's always important and something to be addressed no matter how minor the injury, but how far have you taken it?

EDIT: I'm in the process of trying to recover from self-harming myself. It helped when I told my roommates about it and my family because now they keep an eye out and check my arms for fresh cuts. I believe that it IS serious because it can become an addiction and I recommend you talk with family and friends about finding a counsellor. Good luck!

oh doll. yes, it is serious. unfortunately, i've been dealing with this problem for seven years. it has become an addiction. it's just a temporary solution. it hasn't fixed anything in my life. not to mention, i'm constantly reminded of all my pain just from my scars. i went almost a year without cutting and about two months ago i relapsed. i have fallen right back into my addiction. i have kept this secret from my friends and family. it haunts me. i can't wear a tank top. i worry about the day that i will have to wear a dress that shows off my shoulders for my little sis wedding. i have a tendency to push people away because i'm afraid how they will react when they find out that i'm a cutter. cutting has taken over my life. most people my age are starting their careers. they are happy and have a positive outlook on life. i'm still dealing with the same issues that i had back in high school. i'm not proud of it. i'm still suffering in silence but too afraid to ask for help.

with that all said, everyone is a little bit different. but, i can tell you nothing good comes from cutting. it will only lead you down a self-destructive path. don't wait to get help.

All self-harming is serious in a sense that there is something wrong. My self-harm escalated to the point of needing to be hospitalized so they could monitor me instead of letting to go home from the emergency room.

As of right now I don't self-harm very often/badly and I have so many scars I wish I didn't have. It's a really inconvenient compulsion to have. Even if you don't feel like getting "better" right now, just talking to someone will make life a little easier. Good luck!

tendency to self- harm occurs when a person is not happy or adjusted to some situation or persons or events in ones life. in that case, there is a need to discuss the problem with someone close or if not possible then seek medical counselling. this might help to address the root cause of the problem and overcome the stress and the resulting tendency.
please take care. all the best.

It is very serious. The longer your self harm continues the harder it is to break the habit. I hope that since you only have been doing it for about a year, you will find better ways to cope with the part of you that wants to harm yourself. A therapist can help you choose other ways to deal with your stress.

Yes.

Why don't you love yourself?

How were you hurt?(so that you don't love yourself? It doesn't mean physically hurt)

or How were you hurt, so that you now associate pain with love? (in place of love?)

Get professional help.

You're much better off calling a hotline than asking for help on Y! Answers.

EDIT
I hope you have called a helpline by now. There are many, just look in the phone book.

If not, what are you waiting for?

Ask yourself, why does cutting hurt less than the pain you feel inside? (Or haven't you realized that!)

Here is an online resource for self-injury self-help.

It could help you to better understand your affliction, but you really need to seek therapy.

any self harm is serious

see a therapist or school counselor as soon as possible.

if you are feeling a danger to yourself consult either 1-800-784-2433, a suicide hotline or in urgent cases 911.

good luck

As someone who used to self harm I would say this is serious.

You should get medical attention as soon as possible before it gets any worse.
