My fiance had his son get him a beer from the refrigerator this weekend. When he went back to his mothers this must have came up (I'm sure with much probing from her) and she freaked out. Is it really that bad that he got him a beer?

I think its wrong but my fiancee has his daughter (who will be 7 next month) do the same for him sometimes. I keep my mouth shut about it (not my kid, plus you really do have to pick your battles) but my kid will not be getting someone else alcohol.

dont get me wrong, its not that I dont drink, but it seems very lazy and kinda white-trashy

Ways it would be inapropriate:

~If the father told the son to drink the beer
~If the father threatened the son into getting the beer
~If the father was drunk
~ If the father is an acholic and is not supposed to be drinking so he told the son to get it or something crazy like that.

If he was just like watching a game or something and politely ask the son to do him a favor and get the beer, then it's no big deal. My dad sometimes asks me to get him a beer.

My kids just want to be around their dad. They end up playing rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to get dad a beer. When we have a group over playing poker or watching a game, they get beers for all of the guests. They want to (mainly because a lot of them give tips). I have 8 yr old twins and a 4 yr old. This is one "job" they can all do and get a shiny new quarter for the effort.

This is not necessarily going to cause the child to be an alcoholic (which is probably what she's thinking). When I was little, I always used to get my Grandfather his beers (and so did all 10 of his other grandchildren) and not one of us has any issues with alcohol (in fact, I don't really even like to drink!)

Nothing wrong at all if it's an unopened container of beer and the dad is not getting drunk.

Just make sure that the child is getting talks about alcohol and he'll be fine.

You know, I reflect back to all the times as a child, I fetched a bottle of PBR out of the fridge for my grandfather. I always tagged along with him when he went to the drive-thru to get a new case. That was back in the day when they took the old case with the used bottles and just threw in another in the back seat. Did it make me a criminal or an alcoholic? No. Do I drink today. Yes, I have designed my basement into a racing-bar. However, it didn't stop me from achieving my career goals as a firefighter/paramedic. (have our job, and drinking becomes an outlet!). It didn't stop me from becoming an amature author, or from my fitness regimen. In today's society, as I'm finding out with my own step children, the non custodial parent is always looking for an excuse to stir up the drama and blow something minute, out of proportion. A buddy of mine in the fire service calls them "daddy pops" around his little daughter. Try something innocent like that, but I certainly wouldn't stress this issue, other than the drama queen of a mother stirring up the $-h-i-t to try and create something out of nothing.

My son is 6 and my husband has asked him to get him a beer from the fridge.... I don't see what the big deal is. Definitely sounds like a bitter ex!

it's not AWFUL or anything, but it's best to not have a kid even think about alcohol for as long as possible, until he's a teenager. tell your fiancee that he needs to get his own beer. and definitely never let him try alcohol until he's at least 11, and even then only a sip so he can tell how bad it tastes (most kids think it tastes gross, i'm not saying it is though.) that will keep him of alcohol for a while.

this was when i was around 8 and my brother was 6.

we had a blast! sometimes my dad even gave the winner a quarter lol

I think she is just finding reasons to freak out.. my daughter gets her dad a beer from the fridge all the time and it doesnt bother me a bit. Ex's always drill their kids when coming home from the other parents house and then freak out over anything that she "claims" not to like.. i think its no big deal
