We have two cats.. Killer And Beautiful.. They've always used their litter-boxes properly, and never went on the floor -- until!!!!

Killer was sitting on a pillow, just lying there.. When he got up, the pillow was wet. We saw him the whole time, no water spilled... And we're pretty postotive it was pee - it smelled like it too! Anyway, the litter box was pretty bad, but still useable.. I'm cleaning it out daily now.. but he's usually not picky at ALL.. Could something else be the problem?

Please have your vet check Killer's urine for possible urinary problems. Do it IMMEDIATELY. When the urine becomes to alkaline it can cause crystals to form in the bladder and make it painful for him to pee. Cats associate the litterbox with the pain and that is the #1 reason cats pee elsewhere than their boxes.

If you feed your cats on dry food only you need to switch to canned food. On a dry food diet the urine becomes too concentrated.

Go to http://www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article "Urinary Tract Disorders in Cats", "Why Cats Need Canned Food", "What Cats Should Eat", etc. The articles are in alphabetical order so those three are at the end of the fifty or so articles in the Free Article Library at Dr. Hovfe's site.

If Killer wet the pillow when he was just lying there then you have a problem. If he had gotten up and gotten into a position to pee then he would have intentionally peed on the pillow. But to have it wet from him just lying there, your cat has a problem. He needs to be taken to the vet immediately. He probably has infection. As several has said, UTI's are notorious in neutered males and only a vet can safely diagnose this. Dry food is a problem for neutered males - your vet will help you with choosing a better diet for him if this is the case. For now - and if you think this might be the case - you might try diluting pure cranberry juice (natural if possible) with water and giving him some. He does need access to fresh water and lots of it for sure. It is known to help with the problem with cats and dogs, just as it helps with humans. The most important thing to do is get him to the vet tho. Altho I don't want to worry you, and the UTI is the most likely scenario, it can be a sign of other things too so the quicker you get him to the vet, the quicker he can be diagnosed and cured!! Good luck!!

Well, you've got to clean the box daily, but I don't think that is the problem here. If he was just lying on a pillow and got up and left urine, he might very well have a urinary tract infection. This is not an unusual problem with male cats, especially if they have been neutered. Get him to the vet to get this checked out. There are some very good medicines and diets out there now that will treat this problem.

"Anyway, the litter box was pretty bad..."

If you consistently leave the litter box a filthy mess, your cat will find new places to use as the toilet. He may be purposely telling you that you need to clean it. He may be upset that you don't give him proper facilities. Or, he may just find it disgusting to walk around in his own feces. Whatever the case, I can tell you how I solved this problem.

I don't want to clean the litterbox everyday, so I have 3 of them for my two cats. This way, I don't have to worry about cleaning as much, and the smell is minimized because there isn't a huge pile of feces in any of the boxes.

You didn't mention the age of your cats. If they haven't been 'fixed' this could be an issue as well.

Good luck.

Why weren't cleaning it about every other day anyway? I have 2 cats as well, and I have to make sure to clean it otherwise I'll get yelled at by my own cats!

Also, he might have just been marking the pillow. My male cat used to do the same thing.

Cats change just like people. Their likes and dislikes can change every week sometimes when they're going through their own probs. Cats are rather close to humans a good deal of the time.

I think it is the litter box. I clean out my cat's litter box two or three times a day....because I love her so much and I am a worrier. If the problem continues, just try changing brands of litter. cats hate SCENTED litter!

Oh and I use a scoopable litter that is easy to clean out. It just clumps!

He might have a urinary tract infection. Wait a week and observe him to see if it happens again on a regular basis, and keep that litterbox clean. If he continues to use other areas than the box, then take him in for a check up.

If your cats think that box is bad they won't use it. Just because you think it was useable they might not have. Hopefully keeping it clean daily will help. I clean my cats' box twice a day and he has never decided to go elsewhere.

Litter box- It was probably to full & gross. Remember, the cat has feelings too. Or the scent could have bothered him.
