One of my good friends recently joined the Navy as a Hospital Corspman and she said that she stands a good chance of going to Iraq because of her job; she says that it is a much needed position over there....I was just wondering if this is accurate?

This is very accurate! Corpsmen are in high need in Iraq and Afghanistan. She will probably deploy with a Marine unit depending on where she is stationed. I'm in the Navy and in Iraq right now.

There are female members of the Hospital Corps with Medical Battalion units in Al Anbar Province and other locales in Iraq. They are also with fleet hospital units in other locales of the Middle East. As yet, they have not been assigned to the Medical Platoons of Marine Infantry Battalions and there are no plans to do so.

She has a good chance to go as a part of a hospital unit to shore duty or as part of ship's company on a hospital ship. She will not go as a part of the Fleet Marine Force.

I'm almost shocked she was allowed to join as a corpsman. They're taking almost nothing but males at this time.
