The chances of you dying are less than 1%, I think they're like .2% or something. 3,800 troops have died out of 500,000 different troops that have been here. It sounds like we're dropping like flies because that's all the media ever reports. I joined 2 months after I turned 17, right out of high school. I didn't turn 18 till halfway thru my ait, but if you want the pro's and con's of joining, look about 2 questions down, at the question "I'm thinking about joining the army" I listed them all there. Good luck!
P.S. My younger brother just joined, too.

I felt the same way about Vietnam. I enlisted in the Marine Corps and fought in combat. Being afraid of dieing is a natural reaction. I found that when I was in action the fear went away and the adrenaline took over. My daughter is serving in the army in Iraq, she's a truck driver and goes out on missions she has been shot and has been in convoys that have been hit by ieds. They also get mortar fire every day. It's just a part of the job. It's up to you to decide. As I said, I didn't know of anyone who I served with who was afraid of dieing and I always felt that if someone who wasn't afraid of dieing, they must have been crazy

Riddle me this Batman.....
1) How many people died on U.S. highways in just 2006?
2) How many U.S. military personnel have died in Iraq / Afghanistan since Jan 2002 (Apr 2003 for Iraq)?
3) You do realize that in the U.S. we have dedicated road repair personnel, a professional police and rescue force and a working phone system to alert the authorities to accidents and yet with all this there are still more deaths on U.S. highways then ALL the deaths incurred by the military since the start of the Afghan war?
4) So why doesn't the media cover the state of our road system? (because it doesn't sell as well as explosions, bullets and bodies and the media is a business just like McDonald's or Wal Mart, they have to sell something to turn a profit or go out of business)

Then you feel like all of us do. We dont want to die, but we know there is a job to do.
A firefighter doesnt want to run into a burning building, but they know someone has to.
A police officer doesnt want to face a gunman, but they know someone has to.
We are the same. We dont want to go to war, but know someone has to. If you not afriad to die, then there is something wrong with you.
Are you afriad to die everytime you get in a car, or board a plane, or even cross the street? Stairs are big killers too. Everybody dies at some point.
You still have time to decide. Look at all your options. Make sure of what you want. The military has been a good life for me. I enjoy it a lot. It has its good and bad days, but so does any job.

Join the army if thats what you really want to do. Don't focus on the what ifs etc. You can die here in country just as easly as being over seas.

maybe you should wait a little while, you might change your mind and want to pursue a different path in life. if you join the army now, you might regret it later. however, if you still feel the same way in a couple of years, i say good luck and God bless you.

A lot of young people in the war are actually safer there than they are in the neighborhoods they grew up in! Follow your heart, and God bless you for wanting to serve your country. But be aware, it's not fun and games - it is very serious commitment to make!

Having seen much combat in Vietnam, my only advice to you is to not listen to anybody's advice. Only you can make this decision. It's a tough one I know and I appreciate that you want to serve and that it scares you to death. If you do choose to serve though, I thank you in advance. Good luck and keep your head down.
